Villa Kirana

The four-bedroom Villa Kirana rests on Bali’s beautiful Sayan Ridge, where the views are among the most prized in the world. Prepare to be blown away by an unbroken panorama of rice fields, coconut palms, lush jungle, volcanoes, and tranquil gardens that cascade into a deep gorge towards the sacred Ayung River, 100m below.

The architecture and interior design of Villa Kirana will take you on a journey that begins with the flying buttresses and colonnaded cloisters of the ancient Newari villages of Nepal, offering you a stopover along the way in the traditional stilted wooden houses of Laos. Later you may wish to escape from the heat in the Dutch colonial guesthouses of the Malay hill stations, before exploring the Indonesian archipelago for ancient stone-carvings, antique furnishings, contemporary artwork and hand-woven textiles.

Entering Kirana is like walking into a treasure trove, the attention to detail is incredible, carved flowers and animals adorn the ceilings and doors. Fiery Berber rugs, Flores ikat cloth cushions in earthy reds, or a herringbone bedspread in aquamarine, sand and burgundy might dictate the colour schemes. An intricately-carved Javanese bed, soft floaty muslin drapes, a ‘Raffles’ pendant lamp and a solid rice-barn door from Sulawesi blend together as naturally as the lotus flowers and lilies in the Balinese water garden. In fact, you could spend a month in the property and still continue to be struck by the decorative embellishments and blend of rich hues.

When the journey, the quest and the exploration is complete, take time with your family and friends to laze on the daybeds of Kirana’s broad, view-filled balconies, while being waited on by a team of thoughtful staff who will shop for groceries, cook your meals from a suggestion menu (on guest account) and look after your needs. Alternatively, play billiards, work out in the gym, chill out in a living pergola, or swim in a pool that appears to balance upon the rim of the world.

Finally, at the end of the day, turn off the lights, gaze at the fireflies and listen to a gamelan of frogs backed by the rhythms of ritual music drifting across the valley.

Villa Kirana comprises a series of single-and-double-storey timber pavilions, which are linked by covered walkways and rest upon honey-coloured jackfruit-wood stilts, with stone plinths characterised by mythological amphibious creatures. Much of the primitive, ethnic art is built into the doors and windows; balustrades are fashioned from bark-covered tree branches, while carved panels depict gamelan musicians and Balinese dancers.

There are four bedrooms; each with its own distinct ambience created by independent furnishing styles, bold colours, stencils and artwork, and enhanced by louvre-shuttered windows and spacious balconies overhanging the garden and jungle. One of the bedrooms is furnished with a king-size bed, which converts to twins, three have queen-size beds. The study doubles as a spare bedroom, presenting an antique Chinese canopied bed with a 1.5m kapok mattress, ideal for two children. All bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms (one of which is open-air) with walk-in showers, except for the study-guestroom, which has an adjacent bathroom (also with a walk-in shower) that also serves the swimming pool area.

The living room is elegantly furnished with sofas and chairs and equipped with a Bose sound system. It features sliding glass doors and louvre shutters which can be open during the day and closed for air-conditioned comfort in the evenings. A separate open-sided dining pavilion appears to float upon the lotus pond. Conveniently located close to the fully-equipped kitchen, it is sheltered by a thatched roof and presents dining facilities for 12.

Additionally, guests can descend a flight of stairs to a well-equipped gym with an adjoining shower room, or ascend a staircase to a billiards room where they can partake in tournaments on a handmade antique mahogany pool table. Another set of stairs leads to a cosy timber-clad entertainment room fitted with a cushioned built-in sofa, air conditioning, and a satellite-channel TV/DVD player.

The delightful rambling gardens are full of surprises such as a rustic gazebo with a conical, palm leaf roof. Soothing ripples originate from the central water court, fountains spout on tiny islands under frangipani trees; and a pergola supported by living tree trunks and dripping in thunbergia flowers provides a shady place to sit. At the edge of the garden is a 15m free-form jungle-style swimming pool with a stone deck.
