Kurumba House
Stretching seawards from Kurumba’s deep pillared veranda is a lawn scattered with reclining chairs topped with sun mattresses and gazing out to sea. Between the boughs of two fine-leafed trees languishes a hammock furnished with a soft rug and cushions for soulful swinging to the sound of the waves. At the lower end of the garden and under the shade of a huge kurumba tree – the property’s namesake - is a timber ambalama complete with barrel-sized cushions that offer instant relief as you melt into their soft pinstriped embrace. The sea in front of Kurumba offers safe swimming in certain places year-round and is excellent for body boarding – a couple of boards are provided for guest use – while the beach house’s central location within wide Mawella Bay is a bonus as the bleached golden sand extends for a kilometre in each direction.
Kurumba exhibits an air of calm and tranquillity; it’s a place to get away from it all. As such, it offers few facilities and leaves guests to entertain themselves. Staff keep the house tidy and Tekla can cook excellent Sri Lankan cuisine, a number of pasta dishes and lots of salads, which means that you will be well fed and have little need to eat out. Once your shoes are off; time becomes meaningless at Kurumba and sundrenched days slowly melt into night.

At Kurumba House what you see is what you get and this simplicity is the perfect aid to relaxation. The house contains two identical sea-view bedrooms, each with queen-size platform beds, ceiling fans, ensuite bathrooms, and twin cinnamon-wood built-in wardrobes either side of their entrance doorways. Bedrooms both open onto a deep pillared veranda, also overlooking the ocean, that’s cooled by whirring ceiling fans and furnished with white rattan lounge seating and a dining table for four. To one side of this area is a fully equipped kitchen finished in grey terrazzo with access to a laundry room and storage area at the back.
