Set in the highest tier of villas within L'Orchidée Residences estate, with fantastic sea views across Patong bay, the four-bedroom Villa Laelia offers both a peaceful hideaway and easy access to Phuket's best dining, nightlife and shopping choices. The villa's top-floor living and dining area is a beautifully furnished space set under a northern-Thai-style peaked roof with skylight, fronted by a large shaded terrace. Also on this level is a private nine-metre pool; a lovely blue oasis with an attached jacuzzi while a few steps above the pool one of the guest bedrooms is housed in a separate pavilion that backs onto the jungle-clad hillside.

Twenty or so people can be entertained here with ease, thanks to the spacious and well-connected indoor-outdoor seating areas and a fully equipped modern western kitchen. This floor is fully air conditioned, though it can be kept comfortably cool for most of the day with ceiling fans and folding glass doors allowing tropical breezes to flow through. The vaulted ceiling gives a touch of grandeur, while a blend of traditional Thai and modern decorations and furnishings adds colour and charm.

Down a central staircase are three more bedrooms, offering extended families or groups flexible sleeping arrangements. Two sea-facing, king-bedded master suites, both with jacuzzis in their ensuites, provide wonderful romantic retreats while, towards the back, the fourth bedroom has twin beds that can be made into a king-sized bed and a bathroom with shower.

Just across the road is the estate’s club house with a fitness centre, mini-mart, a children's pool and a shared swimming pool with magnificent ocean views. There's also a pétanque pitch, pool table and sauna here, and the shop keeps a small stock of books, magazines, toys and games that guests may borrow.

Seamless and efficient service is provided by L'Orchidée Residences' on-site management team, which takes care of the estate's 25 villas. Airport transfer and daily cleaning service is included, while a dedicated in-villa maid or chef is provided on request (extra charges apply). Most guests opt to order meals from the estate’s central kitchen or to self-cater. Other easily arranged services include in-villa massage, grocery shopping, tours/transport and babysitting.

Villa Laelia is divided into two levels, with the top floor providing a spacious living area, fully-equipped kitchen and dining room that opens out to the terrace and pool. To the front of the living area, sofas, chairs and a daybed are ideally arranged for some quiet reading, while a second comfortable seating area is set around a 42-inch TV with surround-sound speakers and a DVD player. The modern western kitchen is stocked full of dishes, cooking supplies and equipment including a dishwasher and oven, and a stately wooden dining table seats eight. High ceilings and a skylight along the peak of the villa's roof give this room an added airiness and brightness while one-touch lighting control provides eight mood settings.

The terrace, cooled by ceiling fans and shaded by a gorgeous teak sala (relaxation pavilion), is an ideal spot to enjoy breakfast while taking in the sea view, with seating for eight around an oval wooden table. Off to the side is a nine-metre infinity pool and jacuzzi, lined on one side by a beautiful white stone wall with decoration reminiscent of an ancient temple fresco. Overlooking the pool in a raised pavilion with its own terrace is a spacious bedroom with a king-sized bed and ensuite bathroom with shower. This room enjoys the most dramatic sunset views, with the pool and sea stretching out in front of it.

On the lower level, two sea-view master suites are fitted out with romance in mind, each with king-sized beds and two vanities and showers in their ensuites. A two-person jacuzzi bathtub sits in an alcove at the back corner of the first master suite, while the second master suite's jacuzzi is in its bathroom's corner with picture windows offering wide views over the valley and sea. A third bedroom, set at the back, features twin beds that can convert into a king-sized bed and has a shower in its ensuite bathroom.

A single covered car parking space is provided, with more parking available at the secured main estate entrance. Free buggy service to and from the villa is offered 24 hours a day. In front of the villa is a lift providing easy access from the car park to the villa's lower level.
