Lanka Lodge
The front veranda at Lanka Lodge is a beautiful spot to sit and cherish the surroundings, although with the number of gorgeous getaways scattered throughout the garden – seats, hammocks and sun beds – you’re spoiled for choice. From each bedroom, shuttered windows open onto the views, whilst a central courtyard joining the old and new wings of the villa proffers vistas from one side of the garden to the other.
Lanka Lodge, which offers basic but homely comfort, is staffed by a small team that includes a resident manager and a cook who’s been with the property’s current owners for over 20 years. The villa sits in a small fishing village just a few kilometres from the wide arched bay of Weligama, renowned for its eastern shoreline surf breaks. Also only a short drive away (the villa has a minivan and driver available for an extra charge) is Mirissa Beach, from where you can embark on exciting whale- and dolphin-watching boat trips from November through April.

The entrance to Lanka Lodge is to the side of the building and clearly marked by a pair of elephants moulded onto the wall. This takes you into a pleasant courtyard with doorways into the garden straight ahead and to the bedrooms on either side. The back of the house is the oldest part, whilst the front section was added at a later date to provide more rooms and living space.
Lanka Lodge has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Each bedroom comes with a four-poster bed (two king-size and two queens), a wardrobe and a ceiling fan, whilst the two rear bedrooms also offer air conditioning and a single daybed each, suitable for sleeping a child. The largest of the rear garden-view rooms has an ensuite bathroom with shower, whilst the other room’s bathroom is located a few footsteps away, just off the courtyard.
At the front of the villa are two more bedrooms that share a bathroom with shower. A simple white-tiled kitchen with fridge/freezer, tea and coffee making facilities and a sink also lies to the front of the property looking into the courtyard, as does a large veranda furnished for living and dining: to one side is a built-in cushioned bench and to the other is a dining table for eight. From here wonderful views out over the garden and swimming pool unfold.
A better equipped, though still fairly simple, kitchen is situated in a separate building at the side of the villa, and can be used by guests who wish to self-cater.
