Lansiya

There are few villas in Sri Lanka able to offer what Lansiya can; true privacy, abundant space, magnificent views, extraordinarily sensitive service, exceptional cuisine and beautifully landscaped surroundings. Situated above a rocky wave-splashed headland overlooking two of the south coast’s most spectacular and secluded sandy bays, this artistic four-bedroom property offers a true taste of the tropics as it succumbs to its tumbling landscaped surroundings so completely; every bedroom, living space and dining area relishing the invigorating sea views. Dips in the infinity swimming pool, showers under the stars, high tea on the lawn, candlelit dinners enhanced by fireflies, and a multiplicity of spots for solitude and socialising; Lansiya has it all.

Lansiya’s clutch of buildings are set within a garden filled with many palm species, unusual coastal vegetation and exotic favourites such as frangipani, heliconia and hibiscus, not to mention a rolling emerald green lawn offering a delightful setting for weddings and events. A stream descends through the garden sprouting multi-limbed palms as it goes, finally ending at a little blue gate beside the spray-speckled boulders and the energetic swell of the sea. Offering unrivalled privacy, Lansiya was originally a delicious one-suite villa beloved of honeymooners; however the owners have recently added three more ensuite bedrooms as well as a chill-out pavilion that gazes across the infinity swimming pool towards the open-sided dining area and bar. Chic, rustic and stylish, Lansiya is still an exceptional place for lovebirds, but has sensitively evolved into a wonderful retreat for families and friends as well.

Artistic touches such as the earthy colour schemes, the eye-catching collection of paintings, prints, pastels and photographs, as well as an elegant design both inside and out all offer an insight into the personalities of the owners from Colombo who cherish this special family hideaway and visit as often as they can. As such, it feels lived in and loved; books and DVDs fill cabinets, board games and cricket bats are available for use and the welcoming team of staff know exactly how to look after guests with just the right balance of friendliness and discretion. The owners are also foodies and chef Sylvester cooks up some sensational dishes that heighten the enjoyment of staying here even more; conveniently, all food and soft drinks are included in the rate.

Lansiya comprises a clutch of buildings that all share fabulous sea views. Its four fan-cooled bedrooms are split between the recently-built Lansiya House and Lansiya Hill, where a single suite is tucked into the palm-topped headland boasting exceptional views of the bay.

Lansiya House features a wide passageway on the ground floor that takes you directly through the building from the rear entrance to the lawned garden at the front, furnished with built-in seating topped with cushioned mattresses. Leading off from here is a cosy lounge with rattan chaise longue and sofa seating, a TV with satellite connection and DVD player plus cabinets brimming with movies, books and board games. As this room also has an ensuite bathroom with shower it’s ideal for sleeping less mobile guests.

On the first floor are three bedrooms that open onto a shared sea-view balcony furnished with cushioned rattan chairs. Although the bedrooms at either end are slightly larger than the middle one, all three are furnished with king-sized four-poster beds plus either a single bed or chaise longue that could be used to sleep an extra child. Folding doors open widely to welcome the views and the ensuite bathrooms feature designer sinks, wardrobes and attached open-air shower courtyards for bathing under the stars.

A grassy lawn sweeps down gently from Lansiya House to an infinity swimming pool which is flanked on either side by a pair of fan-cooled pavilions; one constructed with built-in sofa seating for relaxation (ideal for yoga too), the other for dining and shadily admiring the beautiful sunset views. The dining pavilion is larger and comes with seating for ten, a sitting area with loungers and a bar that leads into a fully-equipped kitchen with centre-island, oven and plenty of fridge space for chilling drinks.

Accessed via a little bridge, the fourth bedroom is in Lansiya Hill. This suite enjoys extreme privacy and its own wrap-around balcony furnished with loungers, sofa seating and a circular dining table spectacularly overlooking the bay. The bedroom is furnished with an empire-sized bed and a huge Dutch chest as well as a chaise longue that could be used to sleep a child. To the rear is a passageway with cupboard storage, and leading off from this a toilet, a mini bar and a big open-air shower courtyard with garden.
