The Last House

The Last House is a strikingly serene property, and a wonderful tribute to the vision of Sri Lankan master architect Geoffrey Bawa. Renamed the Last House since it became Bawa’s architectural swansong, it is set within a grassy tree-filled garden overlooking the deep blue ocean with a design that perfectly reflects both its cultural context and the beauty of its location. As is typical of Bawa’s legendary designs, grassy courtyards act as open-to-the sky rooms whilst verandahs and loggias serve as covered rooms without walls. Colour is a major feature of the house as saffron walls beautifully contrast with turquoise antique doors and windows that dramatically frame the views into or outside of the house enabling space to flow smoothly from interior to exterior.

The idyllic position of the Last House, located near Tangalle, simply celebrates relaxation. The lawned garden weaves in and around the house, finally settling at the back where it gently slopes to a natural fence that divides the property from the extensive sandy beach of Seenimodera. From everywhere: the rooms, the glorious swimming pool, the bathtub, can be heard the powerful melody of the ocean as the waves build and crash onto the fine golden sand. Verandahs are perfect areas for reading a book or contemplating the scene. Far out on the horizon can be seen the fishing boats, both in the daytime and lit up as specks of light at night under a thousand twinkling stars and a glassy moon. The extensive unspoilt, mostly deserted beach holds endless opportunities for activity whilst also providing for safe swimming for much of the year. A small lagoon to the back of the house is home to many exotic birds.

The five friendly staff at the Last House pamper their guests discreetly and keep the house up together; the extensive garden is brushed every morning and the cuisine is such a delight that you will not want to try anywhere else. This is an ideal beach retreat for families and groups of friends who will love its space, its multitude of private areas and its secluded position on a fantastic beach.

The Last House has five en-suite rooms (as well as a small nanny’s room that can double up as a children’s room if necessary). On entering, you pass into the house under an archway and up some steps to be greeted with a courtyard featuring a beautiful swimming pool circled by a grassy lawn bordered by the kitchen, the living areas and a crimson bougainvillea covered wall. Immediately to the right as you come up the steps is a secluded walled garden which leads to the elevated Glass Bedroom that boasts extensive views of the lagoon and jungle. It also has a magically positioned writing desk in front of an open window overlooking a saffron-walled covered walkway, the swimming pool, garden and sea.

To the far side of the swimming pool is the heart of the house. On the lower floor are a sitting room with huge squashy sofas scattered with jewel coloured cushions and an open-sided dining room with a covered seating area that forms part of the wide wraparound verandah overlooking the glorious jade green garden and sea. The interiors are never overdone; whitewashed walls, smooth concrete floors, contemporary furnishings, elegant antiques, colourful artwork and sun-bleached driftwood complement the uncluttered design that perfectly puts the mind at ease by reflecting its tranquil location. A fully equipped double kitchen, guest toilet and staff quarters are reached via the dining room.

From the sitting room, steps lead up to the first floor that features a huge Master Bedroom with extensive views through tall sliding windows over both the rear and front gardens and sea. Its ensuite bathroom has similar views and is huge, featuring a free standing Victorian bathtub, a separate shower and twin basins. The Master Bedroom shares a wide furnished balcony with the Children’s Room, a spacious twin bedroom that shares an en suite bathroom with a much smaller twin or nanny’s room to the rear. On the ground floor are two further doubles – the Turquoise Room and the White Room - with private gardens and sea views, one of which features a walk-through en suite bathroom with huge open-air concrete tub with overhead rain shower.
