Baan La Wadee 1 is a three-bedroom villa bursting with personality and tropical refinement. Set in a small private estate, this villa enjoys its own private comforts in a walled tropical garden setting far from the hectic tourist areas of Phuket, yet it's located within a few kilometres of the island's best beaches and a range of dining and shopping choices. Designed in a modern style with Asian touches, the villa features a large peak-roofed pavilion with an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area that completely opens out to the shaded terrace and 8.5-metre infinity pool.

The other section of the pavilion houses the spacious king-bedded master suite, which has direct access to the pool, and a roomy ensuite bathroom. Between the master suite and the living area are two more stylish, bright bedrooms, each with king-sized beds and their own bathrooms. Baan La Wadee's pool terrace features an outdoor dining table and a lovely peak-roofed sala (Thai gazebo) with a cosy loveseat perfect for evening cocktails or relaxing between swim sessions.

Surrounding the villa is a high wall lined with palms and tropical plants offering total privacy from the neighbouring villas. Two of Phuket's most appealing white-sand beaches, Layan and Bang Tao, are located within a kilometre or two of the villa. Bang Tao is home to the seven-resort Laguna Phuket complex, with a good range of restaurants, shops, spas and activities for the kids on offer. Layan has a more rustic charm, with local fishing boats plying the inlet that runs back from the soft-sand beachfront and some casual restaurants serving seafood and cold beer.

Baan La Wadee is self catering, yet a full range of services is provided by the villa management company, reached by phone and on call for emergencies 24 hours a day. Daily maid service is included, while a host of extras including a Thai chef, laundry, island tours, in-villa massage treatments, car rental and taxis, shopping, and babysitting may be arranged for an extra charge.

The villa is well designed to enjoy the tropics, set in an L-shape around the swimming pool. The kitchen, dining and living rooms are all in the larger, open-plan section of the pavilion set along the length of the pool. The other section houses the master bedroom, while two more bedrooms are in the connecting crux of the L and open out to the foyer.

Each bedroom features an ensuite bathroom with granite counters and attractively tiled showers, while the master has an extra-large ensuite with a double jacuzzi, double vanity and walk-in wardrobe. Sliding doors at the foot of the master bed lead directly out to the pool. Dark wood furniture and colourful silk bed accents and curtains give each bedroom a sophisticated feel, while photographs of beaches, outdoor scenes and local life add fresh, tropical touches.

From the living and dining areas, where an added touch of grandeur is provided by the gorgeous wooden Balinese-style vaulted ceiling, two sets of sliding glass doors lead to the pool terrace. The living room is furnished with an L-shaped water hyacinth sofa upholstered in dark brown and scattered with shimmering silk pillows, set to face the 40-inch flat-screen TV. In the centre of this spacious pavilion is a bamboo dining table that seats six. The kitchen, fitted with wooden cupboards and stainless steel accents, is large, modern and well equipped with top-quality appliances and cookware. Two bar stools are set alongside the centre island which, together with the counter tops, is finished in sleek black granite. A utility room with a washer, dryer, iron and ironing board for guest use is behind the kitchen.

Up to six people may indulge in alfresco dining on the terrace under a lovely wood-beam awning, while on the opposite side of the pool is a deliciously decadent sala, roofed with cedar-tiles and furnished with a poly-rattan loveseat. Here, candle lamps and colourful orchids add a romantic touch. Two sun loungers in a smart black and white design are set upon the wide sand-washed pool terrace.
