Villa M

A worn leather Paddington Bear suitcase complete with peeling P&O stickers sits in the corner, a signed Donald Bradman photo on the side, the Don’ts for Husbands/Wives are as relevant today as they were when first published in 1913. These are just some of the eclectic mix of collectables that sit wonderfully in the context of the brand new (2009) 5 bedroomed (all ensuite) Villa M. With its white washed walls, picket fenced balconies, wood floors and graceful columns the villa is gloriously reminiscent of some colonial outpost of some bygone era. The roof-top Jacuzzi with palm top views over Bo Phut Bay and down the beach of Fisherman’s Village, the 46” Sony TVs, mood lighting and top of the range air-conditioning, and the crisp modern bathrooms and kitchen bring the villa very much up to date. Bookshelves lined with Grisham, Paterson and Pictionary contrast delightfully with photos from the 30s. The house throughout is white with dark wide-planked wood floors - bathrooms are tiled in white, have white fixtures and the latest fittings. The kitchen has white cabinetry with modern stainless appliances. Furnishings have a touch of India with black and white inlayed tables and chairs and hand crafted silver draw sets.

Spread over 3 storeys, the villa is right in the heart of Fisherman’s Village, Koh Samui’s quaint and quiet street of beachside restaurants, bars and boutiques. The location is very different to the hustle and bustle of Chewang, the island’s tourist centre 15 minutes drive away. Sitting right on the beach, the calm waters of Bo Phut Bay are a short step off the terrace and pocket size lawn studded with tropical coconut palms. Alternatively there is a 6.5 x 2.5 metre pool for respite from the hot sun. This is definitely a Gin and Tonic house, served by the villa staff of course, (the villa has a manager and cleaner and for an additional charge supplies an accomplished chef) – do pack your Panama hat and cane although there is one supplied if you forget.

The entrance to the villa is from the rear through large studded wood gates and tall glass front doors. Off the hall a study/maid’s room (ensuite shower) leads off to the left, open stairs head up, whilst ahead is the ground floor living room. Here 3 sets of doors open onto a teak sun terrace with a 6.5 x 2.5m swimming pool. A short flight of steps takes you down to a small lawn which blends into the beach. The sea is not 15 metres away. The living room features a lounge with casual couches, satellite TV and DVD player, dining for 8 and a modern well equipped kitchen. Also downstairs is a bedroom (queen) with ensuite bathroom (bathtub and hand held shower).

The landing of the first floor has another lounge area, again with satellite TV, DVD player and casual couches. Floor to ceiling doors open out onto a sea facing balcony decked out with easy chairs. Three bedrooms lead off – all queen size, all ensuite (2 with showers, 1 with tub) and all air-conditioned. The front bedroom has sea views and opens onto the balcony and the back bedroom has a private terrace overlooking the quiet one way street at the back.

Up another flight of stairs is the master bedroom again queen, again ensuite (shower) and again air-conditioned. It has a private terrace out the back and access to the front roof terrace which incorporates a Jacuzzi, sun loungers and a casual bar from which to enjoy the view.
