Mahatma House

  • Location: Seseh-Tanah Lot
  • Number of bedrooms: 5
As Crowded House sang, “God can’t stand Beelzebub, cos he looks so good in black,” and never has a reason for appearance envy been so polished. Dramatic and moody, with a Chinese-Japanese twist, Mahatma House is a lavish, five-bedroom villa, indeed dressed all in black; its dark walls reflecting the perfect symmetry of an architect’s dream. Linked by a garden door, Mahatma is the mirror image in design, and the opposite in colour, of its virgin-white sister, Villa Matahari.

The villa reveals reflective surfaces throughout, literally from the ground up; the swimming pool, fish ponds, mirrored walls, tinted windows and the highly-polished black concrete floors all conspire and illude to double the space, and yet the space that actually exists is already huge.

With a main building flanked by a pair of two-storey wings, and two standalone guest suites on the far side of the garden, Mahatma’s presence is replicated in the still waters of its 18m swimming pool along with an abundance of relaxation areas, both social and private. Four out of the five bedrooms have private outdoor sitting areas while more communal seating is arranged in front of a 49-inch flat-screen, satellite channel TV downstairs . Two dining areas top it all off with a formal table for ten and a low slung Japanese-style dining experience for six.

Standing as a dominant feature at the far end of the garden – and mimicking the impressive volcanic-rock water wall that greets guests upon arrival at the villa – is a vertical rock garden encrusted with moss and ferns, reminiscent of a mature riverbank. Directly beneath this, contemporary comfort meets nature with an alfresco sitting area that overlooks the pool and provides a day camp for all.

A full-time cook is on hand to prepare local and Western dishes from a suggestion menu. The housekeeping team will do the provisioning and keep receipts for guest reference.

Mahatma and Matahari can be rented together, presenting accommodation for up to 18 people: perfect for weddings and other special events. In brooding partnership with its neighbouring ‘bride’ in white (which is the more appropriate shade for nuptials after all), Mahatma’s cool black suit is the ideal outfit for nocturnal groover-and-shaker happenings.

Mahatma’s well-spaced accommodation comprises two master suites positioned on the upper floor in each wing of the main building, complete with spectacular sea views and roof terraces. The symmetry extends to the opposite side of the garden with twin stand-alone garden suites separated by the pool deck on which rests a central lounge under the sky. A balé (relaxation pavilion) in the garden offers another place to chill-out.

The ground floor of the main house is open to the coconut-palm-studded garden and 18x7m swimming pool, and at its heart is the living room, which is aligned with the pool and furnished with lazy chairs and a Chinese-styled, black chaise-longue and daybed piled with silk cushions. The oriental theme introduces a smiling roly-poly Buddha, a stack of gongs, funky seats and a side-table in front of a green-tinted antique wall panel. Fish ponds with stepping stones link this area to the outer wings, one of which houses the formal dining room, complete with table for ten, and fully-equipped feature kitchen, the other a more casual, dining veranda furnished Japanese-style with six floor-level chairs and a rustic low table. Set back from this is a TV lounge, with a glass wall on one side, a large sofa, and a 49-inch TV/DVD player and four speakers. Perhaps the funkiest distinction is the iron work that encages the twin stairwells, while the most innovative is a decorative wall in the kitchen showcasing the green lids of old, krupuk (rice cracker) jars. A guest washroom is conveniently located on the ground floor as well as a smaller bedroom accessed from the garden.

The generously-sized master bedrooms are nicely divided into sleeping, dressing and sitting areas using clever design barriers, such as mats and couches. Every bedroom is furnished with a king-size bed, and all bathrooms have walk-in rainshowers. The master bathrooms are each fitted with a black bathtub for two, while the garden suites each incorporate a black polished concrete vanity unit with a wide washbasin within the bedroom as well as a bathtub sunk into the floor. Each garden suite is flanked by a covered sitting room, open on two sides, and also a timber deck in a private back garden.
