Villa Mako
Designed by a Dutch architect, the authentic colonial style presents a rich and creative combination of two cultures. It’s easy to be transported to a bygone era while gazing at the beautiful Balinese landscape and enjoying a pot of Earl Grey tea on your bedroom terrace or sitting in the magnificent hall, gin & tonic in hand, waiting for dinner to be served. Yet, at the same time, this rural idyll is all about modern comforts – its beautiful feature kitchen, cosy media room and stylish sunlit bathrooms will bring you right back to the 21st century.
And then there’s the garden! Imagine a stairway through an avenue of tree ferns, leading down to the swimming pool at the far side of a velvety lawn, punctuated with sweet-scented frangipanis and coconut palms. This family-oriented villa makes the effort to be both child- and environmentally-friendly; a gated fence separates the building from the pool which is filled with light salt water instead of chlorine. Youngsters are further considered with toys and a library of children’s books and DVDs.
Located in a traditional village, Villa Mako also honours local culture; staff are happy to escort guests to Balinese Hindu ceremonies at the nearby temple, and the cook loves to prepare Balinese feasts. Villa Mako operates a grocery system on guest account with dishes chosen from a selection menu and customised according to requirements. American-style breakfasts are inclusive of price and the staff will happily do the provisioning for all meals at no additional cost. Indeed, guests rave about Villa Mako’s home-cooked delights, all of which contribute to that previously-mentioned extra special WOW factor!

The daytime rooms of this single-storey house are arranged around a courtyard, complete with a lotus pond and bubbling water feature. The kitchen and breakfast room is on one side, with the media room opposite, and the splendid main hall – the social hub of the villa – directly ahead, presenting a huge semi-open-air living and dining area under an 8.5m-high vaulted roof. The main hall is furnished with a dining table for ten below a wall of striking decorative masks; a formal lounge suite incorporating a huge sofa piled high with cushions; an antique coffee table and a Persian carpet which adds richness and colour to the scene. The adjoining stone terrace doubles the living space, making this a great party venue.
The timber-walled media room is super cosy, furnished with an oversized polka dot sofa, a leather lay-z boy chair, a sofa bed and a coffee table. The air conditioned room is equipped with a TV/DVD player, sound system, computer and fax machine for guest use, plus a library of books.
The three air conditioned bedrooms are accessed from the main hall. The Bali Room and Colonial Room enjoy lovely views and sunny balconies, while colours are used to great effect in the soft furnishings, such as the green-and-saffron-edged ikat bed curtain. King-size four-posters, recycled teakwood floors, French windows with stained glass and colonial shutters, antique furniture, gold-framed mirrors, and soft lighting combine to create a romantic ambience. Little girls, meanwhile, will love the pink-themed, twin-bedded Bamboo Room. The dressing room adjoining the Bali Room can also be used as a nursery/massage room. The ensuite bathrooms are fashioned in cream-coloured terrazzo, with twin washbasins, rainshowers, and glass skylights. The Bali and Colonial Room bathrooms also have large sunken bathtubs.
Guests are welcome to use the fully-equipped feature kitchen with its glass-fronted cupboards full of sparkling tableware. To one side is a cheerily-coloured breakfast area, with a circular marble-topped table for six.
The garden is gorgeous, rolling down to a river and bordered by mature trees and a coconut palm plantation. The 15m mango-shaped pool has a shallow platform for kids, and a stone terrace furnished with sunloungers and Balinese parasols. On one side is a barbecue balé (gazebo) with a dining table for six, a kitchenette, and a washroom; opposite is a cushioned poolside balé.
