Mandalay Lake Villa

Mandalay is one of Sri Lanka’s most cherished hideaways. Picturesquely situated on the serene shores of Koggala Lake, Mandalay is an enchanting private sanctuary that’s the perfect antidote to work. Enhanced by a glorious tropical garden, the villa’s gorgeous lakeside views can be enjoyed, collectively or solitarily, from many places throughout the grounds. Achieve instant relaxation as you curl up on cushion-clad sofas and immerse yourself in a book; indeed you may even feel suitably inspired to write your own. Martin Wickramasinghe, one of the island’s most celebrated authors, often used the neighbourhood around Mandalay in his work; Madul Doova, the mystical uninhabited island that Mandalay so picturesquely overlooks, inspired the title of a book he penned in 1947.

Evocatively named after Rudyard Kipling’s iconic ballad, Mandalay, the property is certainly full of Eastern Promise; a delightfully large swimming pool basks exotically in the garden beside an expansive living and dining pavilion whilst right beside the lake is a small ambalama (gazebo) lavishly accessorised with cushions for quietly observing lakeside life. Perhaps the villa’s most gorgeous feature however is the sultry master bedroom that takes up the entire first floor of the main house and is,without doubt, one of the most romantic on the island. The highly personal design of the house actually came from Geoffrey Bawa, a friend of the original owners, who sketched his vision for them onto the back of an envelope. A quick glance is certainly all that’s needed to see that Bawa’s architectural hallmarks for tropical living are definitely in evidence here.

Mandalay is perfectly suited to families, but also wonderful for decadent couples. The small staff team are discreet but pamper to all of your needs, including the provision of memorable meals (groceries on guest account) that can be enjoyed most evocatively from the villa’s own pontoon that reaches out over the still water of the lake; gorgeous at sunset. Fishermen often pass by here and drop in to proffer their fresh catch or to whisk you off on a vibrant tour of the lake. Although Mandalay might feel a million miles from anywhere, the beach is less than a kilometre away whilst a selection of restaurants, shops and amenities are only a fifteen minute drive.

Mandalay’s sleeping and living areas are divided between two buildings. The main house is home to the three air conditioned bedrooms and a TV lounge whilst the poolside pavilion is furnished for living and dining. Beside the lake is a small open-sided ambalama that’s topped with cushions and designed for quietly contemplating the views.

On the first floor of the main house is the master bedroom. Expansively occupying the length of the property this gorgeous bedroom comes with a king-sized bed protectively enclosed within four posts hung with mosquito netting, plus a writing desk and a balcony to the side with built-in sofa seating. To the front of the room are a number of folding doors that open onto a second balcony delightfully overlooking the garden, swimming pool and lake. A free-standing tub sits to one side of the room beside a partition wall that leads into the ensuite bathroom with power-shower. A doorway from here leads to a third, smaller, balcony at the far end of the room.

On the ground floor of the main house are two further bedrooms, one on either side of an air conditioned lounge (TV with DVD player) whose folding doors open completely onto the front veranda. Closest to the lake is a small double with attached bathroom and furnished veranda, whilst to the rear is a larger room with queen-sized bed, ensuite bathroom and open-air shower. A little nook with built-in sofa seating is also tucked into the ground floor of the main house.

Across the lawn from the main house is the living and dining pavilion that stretches the length of the swimming pool and overlooks the garden and lake. At its heart is a dining table for eight and comfy sofa seating under whirring fans. Cupboards at the back of this pavilion are filled with books, DVDs, a small collection of CDs, board games and jigsaws as well as a CD player. An equipped kitchen with drinks cooler leads off to one side of the pavilion whilst to the other is a convenient guest washroom.
