Villa Matahari

  • Location: Seseh-Tanah Lot
  • Number of bedrooms: 4
I spy with my little eye a sumptuous villa named Matahari. In the Indonesian language, Matahari means the sun – an appropriate name for this dazzling symmetrical property, which embraces space, exudes style and radiates sunlight.

Villa Matahari is situated just footsteps from the beach in the centre of the sunny seaside village of Seseh on Bali’s southwest coast. A Spanish-inspired dream in white, it boasts custom-designed furnishings, crisp white walls, white polished-concrete floors, and a soaring shingle roof lined with white-painted timber. Accommodation comprises two sexy master bedrooms, two guest suites on the far side of the swimming pool, an open-sided pavilion incorporating living, dining and entertainment spaces, an open-air lounge and a spa room where you can enjoy treatments and massages. Completed in 2009, this haven of tranquility has been described as “A modern coffee table book house”, fulfilling the expectation of folks who are looking for something funky and contemporary-styled, supported by a great team of staff.

The name Matahari has also become synonymous with espionage, intrigue, and sensuality. And these words too befit the villa. Sensual for sure – at Matahari all of your senses will be stimulated – from the sight of the sea, the sound of ritual temple music, and the scent of flowers, to the taste of the cook’s delectable cuisine and, at the end of the day, the feeling of sinking into a plush king-size bed. As for intrigue; you just might be intrigued as to why the owners have been so generous with space. Matahari is so big that it’s easy to lose your family and companions within its depths. The garden is huge, making the villa perfect for weddings, while each master bathroom alone is big enough to hold a party in. And espionage? Check out the picture windows on three sides of the bedrooms and beside the bathtubs and showers, because it’s possible you might feel a bit exposed. But fear not, modesty is upheld by the provision of one-way mirrored glass. You can spy on the world from Matahari, but in this beautiful private villa, no one can spy on you!

Matahari has an interconnecting garden door to its twin brother Mahatma, which presents a contrasting décor and theme. Both villas can therefore be rented together - perfect for weddings and special events - providing accommodation for up to 18 people.

At Villa Matahari, a two-storey pavilion stares down the length of an 18m swimming pool, at the far end of which are two stand-alone, single-storey garden suites, with a covered open-air living room in between.

The living and dining room is open on three sides and covers most of the ground floor of the main building. The open-plan design incorporates a TV lounge, accessed by wide stepping stones over a pond and furnished with a daybed, complete with a 42-inch TV/DVD player and sound system. Another space nods to tradition with a Balinese gong and antique rice chest. The living area itself is the central focus. Aligned with the swimming pool and overlooking the garden, it is cooled by ceiling fans and furnished with a sofa, chairs and a coffee table. The adjacent dining area is furnished with a table for 12, and next to this is a self-contained, fully-equipped modern kitchen. A private spa room and a guest washroom can also be found on ground level.

The air conditioned master bedrooms are situated in twin wings upstairs. Both feature massive picture windows overlooking the garden, and each is flanked by a roof terrace for relaxing. The king bed and built-in desks in each room are oriented towards the sea, while the vast ensuite bathrooms are each fitted with a luxurious bathtub beside a wide window, as well as a walk-in rain shower. A wide terrazzo vanity unit supports twin washbasins, and huge wall mirrors multiply the space, completed with fitted wardrobes.

The garden suites are furnished with king beds, desks and wardrobes. Ensuite bathrooms present double washbasins, bathtubs and walk-in rain showers. Glass doors in the suites open onto timber decks in private back gardens, and alfresco sitting areas overlooking the pool. All bedrooms are equipped with safes and wall-mounted flat-screen satellite-channel TVs. WiFi internet access is free of charge.

The swimming pool is a stunning feature, which completes the symmetry of the property. The deck is furnished with sunloungers and flanked by a pair of atmospheric firebowls, which are lit at sunset. Finally, a central open-air lounge presents an additional sitting area; sheltered by a roof it presides over the pool, in between the two garden suites.
