Villa Maya Retreat
Housed in eight pavilions strung along the lazy Penet River, Villa Maya has a warm Balinese feel: traditional roofs and intricate stone facades; polished concrete tiles and bathrooms open to the sky; white washed walls and a strong emphasis of wood. The six bedrooms, all ensuite and three with private plunge pools, have natural very private bathrooms in pretty walled gardens and peaceful timber terraces overlooking the river. Doors fold away to create a pleasant inside–outside space. At the centre of the villa is a traditional wantilan (twin roofed meeting room) open on all sides, a 13m swimming pool, a TV pavilion and a sprinkling of balés (relaxation pavilions).
Villa Maya employs a team of staff under the control of the villa manager, including a chef, 24-hour security, housekeepers and waiting staff, and a driver (complete with car). Spa treatments carried out by professional therapists from nearby spas can easily be arranged. Meals can be chosen from a suggestion menu, but the chef can cook a good selection of Asian and Western fare and will handle all provisioning (on guest account).

Villa Maya comprises a series of pavilions spread along the banks of the River Penet with the common areas at its centre. Entry is into the open-sided wantilan living and dining pavilion which sits in front of the pool. Here, an elegant four-metre-long black wood table seats 12 for dinner and tasteful dark rattan chairs with black and white trim offer a casual living space. The reasonably equipped kitchen and a small bar complete the rooms in this pavilion. Also around the pool are sun loungers, a balé, outside dining for eight and an open-sided TV room packed with DVDs.
Upstream, past a large U-shaped outside seating area adorned with bright red cushions and another balé, is the Master Suite. The suite features a private 3m x 5m riverside plunge pool overlooked by a timber sun terrace and a private garden bathroom with tub and shower. Inside is a four-poster king bed, TV with DVD player, stereo, safe and a huge dressing area. Perched just up the gorge a short series of steps above the master suite are two king-bedded guest suites, each with private plunge pool and private terrace. The ensuite bathrooms of both rooms (one is open and the other enclosed) have tubs and showers.
Downstream of the common areas are three further double suites. Each features a small sitting terrace to take in the river and the jungle views on the far river bank. King-size four-poster beds with mosquito nets dominate each room which also have pleasant rattan furnished seating areas. The bedroom nearest the pool has a bath and separate shower in its ensuite, a huge chaise longue for relaxing, and a TV for playing DVDs. The other two bedrooms suffice with ensuite showers and stereos. The sides of the river gorge ‘wall in’ the bathrooms with cascading greenery giving them a lovely natural airy feel. All the bedrooms have large doors which fold right back to open the rooms to the sounds of the river and aromas of the garden, rich with flowers.
