Maya
Timber and terrazzo feature prominently and are perfectly chosen to complement both the older and newer parts of the property. In the refurbished old house the sofa and dining table are both made from timber, whereas in the open-plan living pavilion of the new wing terrazzo is the material of choice. Door frames in the old house feature intricately carved original wooden fretwork, stencils of which have been used to jazz up alcoved walls in the new wing with stunning effect. Custom-designed brass wall lamps are a triumph and beautifully illuminate both interior and exterior walls.
Five bedroom suites, together with the living and dining areas, are liberally spread between Maya’s refurbished old house and the new wing. A fantastic 20m swimming pool winds its way like an indigo snake between the two buildings and into the two acre garden beyond. Here fruit trees visited by exotic birds shade a grassy lawn that gazes longingly over uninterrupted views of paddy fields laid out dutifully beyond. Wildlife shares the garden with you and serene spots for relaxation abound; take your pick from the hammocks, deck chairs and cushion-topped loungers, all placed precisely to soak in the spectacular rural views.
Luxury at Maya comes not only in the form of creature comforts, but also in the form of a highly personal staff team who tend to your every whim. Led by an enthusiastic manager, the team includes a wonderful chef who creates such delicious gourmet cuisine (groceries on guest account) that he’s made quite a name for himself locally. A masseur can come to the villa and dissipate any aches and pains whilst exploration into the village is easy; take off on one of the villa bicycles or hail a tuk-tuk and head to the beach where, at night, you can turtle-watch to your heart’s content under a canopy of shimmering stars.

Maya comprises two buildings; a late nineteenth-century restored manor house and a new wing. Interiors provide a contemporary take on colonialism; custom-designed furniture sits alongside a personal collection of antique furnishings, decorative pieces and artwork from across Asia. The old and the new buildings are purposely kept separate – a wall made half of brick and half of a latticed timber is all that physically joins the two.
The old house marks the entry point to Maya and as you cross the threshold you’re transported into a porch furnished with a timber sofa loaded with cushions and a clutch of art deco rattan armchairs from India. Shelves brimming with books, CDs and DVDs are placed to either side of a doorway that leads into an interior hallway with embellished archway beneath which lies a circular dining table. On the walls, custom-designed brass lamps illuminate beautifully at night and shine self-indulgently during the day.
To either side of this hallway are two bedrooms; one looks out over the swimming pool to the paddy fields beyond, whilst the other gazes more privately over the garden. Both bedrooms come with four-poster, king-sizebeds draped in mosquito netting, writing desks, a pair of wardrobes, air conditioning, ceiling fans and ensuite bathrooms with tropical rain showers.
Each of the three bedrooms in the new wing opens directly onto the pool terrace. They come with king-size beds with mosquito nets, built-in sofas, a writing desk, a lounge seat, air conditioning, ceiling fans and ensuite bathrooms with rain showers. These bedrooms also feature sliding doors that open widely onto private courtyard gardens where deck chairs bask in the sunshine.
To the far side of the pool, perfectly situated to admire the garden and paddy fields, is an open-plan, open-sided living room with a pair of cushion-topped terrazzo sofas, a cable TV and CD player with iPod connection, and a terrazzo dining table for ten. The kitchen is located just off here and well equipped for the western cook – though with such an excellent chef at your service you’ll have little need to step inside.
