Villa Melati
Upon reaching the humble entranceway, the full glories of the three-bedroom villa and its views are revealed. Two symmetrical thatched wings, set at right angles, overlook a deep green valley, while embracing an infinity-edge pool that flows deceptively into the forest. Comfortable indoor and outdoor living areas and large wooden decks on both sides allow you to relish the raw nature of this remarkable river gorge. Very few homes in the world are privileged with a sense of space to match this.
The rooms are all generously sized and laid out with solid, quality furnishings and a smattering of antiques under high-pitched thatched roofs. A precious feature is the antique rice barn that has been converted into a cosy TV room with a bedroom in its loft. In the two master bedrooms you only to have to slide open the wooden shutters to invite the sights and sounds of nature indoors.
The villa was designed as a private residence and subsequently the attention to detail is immaculate. From the juxtaposition of the rambling jungle and undulating lawns to the terracotta-tiled floors and stone pathways, Balinese culture, style and function blend within this rainforest sanctuary to create a magical edge-of-the-world experience. Furthermore, with virtually no neighbours in sight, it’s all yours!
This enchanting villa is staffed by a cheery Balinese team, and is the sort of place where you can look forward to good home-cooking (grocery system on guest account) and friendly banter. It is ideally suited to a small group of friends, or families with older kids.

Villa Melati is comprised of two wings positioned in a V-shape, with the front door at the apex of the V and a fan-shaped swimming pool resting between the arms. This stunning infinity pool, bordered on two sides by a stone deck, appears to overflow into the river valley below. The north wing houses one of the master suites, the dining room and kitchen, while the south wing houses another master suite, which is linked to an open-sided living pavilion. The two master bedrooms, the dining room and the living pavilion all open directly onto the pool deck. A traditional Balinese rice barn in the garden is home to a TV room and romantic loft bedroom.
The living room features a rustic terracotta floor under a soaring thatched roof. It is furnished with daybeds and lazy chairs and equipped with a music system/iPod dock and speakers. Cantilevered to one side is an open-air deck, where the staff are happy to prepare a table for an alfresco dinner. The fan-cooled dining room is furnished with a table for eight and fitted with floor-to-ceiling glass doors; outside is another terrace, complete with a table, making this a lovely spot for breakfast. Adjoining the dining room and linked by a service counter is the well-equipped kitchen, while upstairs is a fan-cooled mezzanine providing additional sleeping accommodation (twin beds) suitable for children, together with a bathroom. Each of the two, spacious, air-conditioned master bedrooms presents a king bed, an ensuite garden bathroom with double monsoon showers, and an adjoining walk-in dressing room.
The Jineng rice barn is an antique building that has been converted into an air-conditioned entertainment room and sleeping loft. It is equipped with a satellite-channel TV/DVD and floor cushions downstairs, and a king mattress upstairs. Garden steps lead down to a quirky cave bathroom, fashioned from river stones, lined with marble and fitted with a shower. This bedroom is best suited for young people or kids, due to its step-ladder access.
The gardens of Melati are dramatically suspended upon a gravity-defying terraced hillside, which rolls down towards the Ayung River, and incorporates an antique, cushioned lookout pavilion, offering a knee-buckling view of the river, the rice fields, the forest and the distant volcanoes.
