32 Middle Street

Once inside this spacious building the visitor feels very much at home. From the road outside, the villa’s deceptive verandah, which was purposefully not renovated, perfectly conceals the sophistication of its interior. On entering the house, your first glance is straight through the property towards the courtyard garden, which is the main focal point of the house. Featuring a beautiful swimming pool surrounded by a grassy lawn it is overlooked by a frangipani tree brimming with bright white blossoms that gently confetti the pool. Despite its small size, birds congregate in the garden, especially the iridescent blue kingfishers that dive into the turquoise water of the swimming pool for a quick cooling dip.

The soaring exposed timber ceilings, multilayered painted wood, and thickness of the walls characteristically highlight the Dutch design of this seventeenth century home, which is one of the oldest in the fort. The owners collection of Asian artwork and antiques personalise the property, which, enhanced by the contemporary open plan design of the living areas, the high ceilings, the white walls and the skylights that allow plenty of light to filter indoors make it feel like a spacious studio. The many specialist magazines on interiors, photography and travel as well as CDs and a wonderful collection of DVDs lend an artistic, relaxed and homely feel to the house.

The Master Bedroom is an elevated living space that incorporates a balcony overlooking the swimming pool and a delightful bathroom with raised tub. The design of the house is minimal with only essential furniture in the bedrooms, and the colour scheme very light with sofas and cushioned day beds providing cosy comfort for guests weary from long activity packed days exploring the fort, Galle town and its neighbouring beaches. A staff of two, one of whom is live-in, deal with any requests regarding shopping for and cooking of meals as well as taking care of the house. Ideal for families with older children and groups of friends.

As you enter through the narrow, inconspicuous verandah, you pass through a high doorway into the hall and are faced with a wonderful view of the garden and pool. To either side of the entrance hall are two simple but comfortable double bedrooms (one bedroom can be set up with twin beds) with a contemporary open plan design incorporating the sleeping and bathing areas as well as impressively high windows facing the street. The door and window frames of these rooms are eye catching as they have been peeled to reveal the multi-layers of paint underneath so that they display an interesting aged effect. The high window alcoves reveal the depth of the original coral walls.

Adjoining the hallway is an entrance into the open plan living and dining area which stretches the entire width of the building. With a long dining table at one end with seating for ten people, a pair of squashy sofas surrounding a coffee table and a further sofa in front of a TV cabinet, it offers plenty of spots for privacy whilst its size is magnified by the soaring ceilings and expansive white walls. Contemporary modern furnishings, South Asian artwork and period antiques blend seamlessly, providing the property with plenty of personality and character.

Just outside of the living room is a wide L-shaped verandah furnished with a day bed that opens into the garden courtyard with pool and leads to the large kitchen, which is to one side of the house. Stairs lead from here up to the Master Bedroom which features a huge king size bed with canopied mosquito net adjoining an en-suite bathroom with copper inlaid sink, separate shower and bathtub. Folding doors open onto a private balcony overlooking the swimming pool that leads around to a narrow rooftop sunbathing deck furnished with sun loungers and a cushioned day bed. Windows allow the cooling breezes to filter through the spacious room, however when closed they become mirrors, which magically enhance the room’s proportions.
