Baan Mika

Baan Mika is what a modern-day Robinson Crusoe might build if he discovered an architect and interior design consultant living on his island. Natural features like grass and shingle roofs, polished wood floors and the refreshing outdoor rain showers attached to every bedroom, make island life a pleasure. At the same time, super comfortable beds, sink-into sofas and multi-room AV capability create the ultimate contemporary escape.

Spoonfuls of artistic flair, some of it hanging on the walls, the rest displayed in the chic choice of furnishings (the suspended chairs on the guest room terraces are fabulous) give the villa a sophisticated, personalised feel. The Bose surround sound system (connected to a CD player and iPod) fills the villa's expansive grounds with tunes; wall-mounted flat-screens in the two master bedrooms inspire cinematic pillow time and, for the ultimate extravagance, leather headrests offer support as you wallow in one of the two moulded terrazzo sea-view bath tubs.

Baan Mika has more than its fair share of family-friendly touches too. Interconnecting guest bedrooms feature stylish detachable king size beds (allowing kids or friends the choice of a twin). Outside, two plunge pools connect to the chemical-free 12m pool - a cool spot for the kids to splash safely or for adults to dip and sip at sunset.

Comprehensive service is provided by a team of full-time staff that Crusoe could only dream of. The smiling, live-in villa manager attends to every request; continental breakfast is included, while an on-call personal chef (included in the rate but with provisioning charged to guest account) can prepare tasty Thai or western meals in the well-equipped kitchen or spark up the barbecue in the breezy beachside dining sala (gazebo). Behind the scenes, a full-time maid and gardener/security guard take care of cleanliness and general well being.

Baan Mika's appealing versatility is almost matched by its surroundings. Steps lead down to a narrow but peaceful beach where the views take in Samui's famous golden Buddha statue and two deserted palm-fringed islands. Yet the villa is only a few minutes' drive to shopping, dining and nightlife. Who wouldn't want to be stranded here.

From outside, Siamese-style red brick walls and shingled roofs announce a unique property and when the long, wooden gates automatically slide open you are not disappointed. Palm trees and foliage cluster between pavilions, with long terraces creating something of a colonial atmosphere. Wooden sun loungers overlook the picturesque bay and guarantee the cocktail hour feeling never recedes.

Baan Mika is symmetrical, with pavilions on both sides mirroring each other all the way down to the beach. Two bas-relief statues flank the wooden entrance door and from there a sandstone terrace, set between the living and dining pavilions, leads down to a spectacular 12m infinity pool with connecting plunge pools.

The living room boasts U-shaped sofas placed back to back, a wall-mounted television with satellite and DVD, Bose sound system (connect through the entire villa), a corner desk with computer and printer, plus unique modern artwork adorning the walls. In the dining room a large wooden table with seating for twelve is placed over an attractive terracotta-tiled inlay on a polished wood floor. Open to the dining room is a fully-equipped kitchen featuring an island hob above which hangs a huge copper-coloured extractor fan shaped like a ship’s funnel.

Two sets of inter-connected guest bedrooms, all with king-size beds (that can be separated to make twins), lie on either side of the main pool; wall mounted televisions with DVDs, beds and sofas, plus large ensuite bathrooms with outdoor showers make for a very comfortable stay. Each room has its own phone and offers air conditioning as well as ornate ceiling fans decorated with silver and coconut trim.

The two king-bedded master suites sit at the front of the property, with sliding glass doors opening onto their own terraces. Both bedrooms are furnished with comfy twin daybeds, stereo systems and large wall-mounted flat-screen TVs. Sliding doors in the main room reveal standing sandstone baths, while behind the sleeping area there are private dressing areas and walk-in showers leading out onto the pool terrace.

Two thatched salas take pride of place on the beachfront lawn. The left sala is a second dining and kitchen area (seating 10) complete with fridges and built-in barbecue, the right sala houses an outdoor lounge with comfortable wood-framed sofas and chairs.
