Moonlight Villa

A steep hillside flanking a crescent-shaped valley on Bali’s southwest tip, offers an almost absurdly beautiful setting to build a house. The point where the thickly wooded gorge gently curves, and the view opens up to reveal the white capped surf of the Indian Ocean and a glimpse of Mt Batukau, is even more magical. Across the valley, broad canopied acacia, fig trees, kapok and bean trees mingle with stunted bush. Multi-levelled and towering high above the treetops, with a 360-degree panoramic vista, is the glass-sided edifice known as Moonlight Villa.

This really is a dream home-away-from-home in a remarkable location. Moonlight Villa was conceived, built and furnished with love. The modern architecture, complemented by home comforts – everything from jacuzzi bathtubs to a home theatre and electronic games – promise reassuring familiarity, complete with a ‘family’ of 10 caring staff who are on hand to shop for groceries, prepare and serve delicious meals, arrange day trips and turn down beds.

The architecture optimises the sheer landsite, while the glass walls and lofty height of the building maximise the views. Moonlight Villa has four bedrooms, each complete with a glamorous ensuite bathroom; plus two living rooms, a feature kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining areas, a rooftop stargazing terrace and another terrace perfect for entertaining. This refreshingly different and very homely villa is complemented by terraced gardens full of flowers, trees hung with pots of rare orchids, ponds, water features, and a 15m swimming pool complete with a large and super-comfortable pool lounge and bar. Also located poolside is a smooth velvety lawn, an ideal setting for parties and small weddings.

Moonlight Villa is a place to lose oneself. By day the rooftop terrace is a sunny lounge and a great lookout for spotting sea eagles and kingfishers, as well as monkeys in the wooded valley below. By night, when the stars are shining and the moon is full, it is easy to understand how this magical dream home got its name.

An ornamental pool, where a trio of whimsical carved stone fish hides among the stepping stones, leads to the main building. Entering the villa, guests will find themselves in an open-plan area incorporating a living room, dining room and kitchen. This space is characterised by glass walls and windows on every side, which can be opened to the sound of the surf, or closed for air-conditioned comfort. There is a sitting area at one end, a dining table for eight in the centre, and the immaculate, fully equipped kitchen at the far end. A set of doors opens onto a shallow clear-water pool, in which are placed two chairs for those wishing to cool their feet. The water then flows via a waterfall to the swimming pool in the garden below. A glass-encased stairway leads from the kitchen to a sitting room/home theatre on the upper level of the villa. With fabulous all-round views, this is very heart of the villa and a social hub. The room is furnished with a sofa, chairs, and a chaise longue covered in gorgeous printed fabrics. From here a door leads out onto the rooftop terrace.

All four of the villa’s bedrooms are positioned on different levels, each with a terrace, to ensure privacy and space. The bedrooms present different colour themes through the use of sumptuous fabrics and attractive artwork; each is equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fans and 24-inch, satellite channel TV/DVD players. Three bedrooms have king beds, and one has twin beds that convert to a king. Each ensuite bathroom tempts guests with a jacuzzi tub for two, crafted in black polished granite. Three of the bathrooms also have walk-in rain showers. The master suite, situated at a lower level next to a relaxing water cascade, includes a living area with a sofa and desk, and a bathroom with a private garden featuring a rain shower under a pergola roof. The elbow-shaped swimming pool (complete with kids’ pool and whirlpool) is on the lowest level, flanked by a sundeck, a bar, and a covered pool lounge with a massive daybed.
