Mirissa Hills - Mount Cinnamon

As you climb the winding road up the hill through the blushing cinnamon plants, catching glimpses of the verdant tapestry of the region as you go, you can only anticipate the panorama that will unfold at its summit. Boasting 360-degree views out to sea over Weligama Bay and inland to the Denipitiya Hills, and capturing the changing light and mood of the local landscape, Mount Cinnamon certainly does not disappoint. Designed by renowned Sri Lankan architect Anjalendran, it is a pure and elegant essay in the island’s vernacular; majestic, but both celebratory and respectful of its surroundings. The villa is also immaculately presented and enhanced by vibrant paintings, sculptures and collages of contemporary Sri Lankan art including a special commission by the well-known artist Laki Senenayake.

Mount Cinnamon has four bedrooms as well as comfortable living and dining areas that make the most of their privileged location. Picture windows and sliding doors maximise the views and allow cooling breezes to infiltrate the property. A swimming pool is discreetly sited in the grassy courtyard garden, whilst a deep verandah to the front of the villa leads onto a sloping lawn and to a picturesque pavilion (ideal for yoga) that artistically overlooks Weligama Bay and the sea. At sunset the view from here is magnificent as the colours in the sky constantly change and finally darken as the evening draws to a close.

The villa is fully staffed and while meals are generally cooked for you by the chef, there is a separate kitchen to the front of the villa that guests can use. A breakfast table on the front verandah offers a particularly scenic spot to soak up the views on rising whilst another dining table is more formally located inside. Places to relax inside the villa include the master bedroom lounge/study where the shelves full of books and TV with DVD player will keep guests of all ages amused. For those who crave some sand between their toes, Mirissa Hills also owns a stretch of beach in the bay, 15 minutes away, which is ideal for picnics.

Mount Cinnamon is designed in a U-shape; a pair of air conditioned bedrooms is located off corridors to either side of a grassy courtyard with swimming pool, whilst the living and dining areas form the bottom of the U, looking out across the sloping front lawn towards the ocean.

Stone steps lead up to the open corridor running along one side of the U, bringing you first to a double bedroom featuring sliding doors onto a deep furnished balcony overlooking the jungle-clad hills. There is a mosquito net suspended above the bed, a wardrobe and an attached bathroom with separate tub and rain shower.

Next is the master bedroom. On entering you pass through a lounge/study with TV, sofa, shelves of books and lots of artwork before entering a large bedroom with double bed, Dutch wardrobe and antique wooden doors onto a private sea-facing furnished terrace. The attached bathroom has a separate tub and shower and overlooks the western side of the cinnamon estate.

The corridor then leads you into a semi-open lounge area furnished with antique wooden seating. On one side, sliding doors lead onto a stone terrace overlooking the magnificent Weligama Bay views. On the other side, you face the pool. Continuing through another doorway, and with the same lovely open perspectives on either side, is an open-plan lounge and dining room where squashy sofas and a dining table for ten are separated by a magnificent sculpture by artist Laki Senenayake entitled, The Enchanted Forest. To the far side of this room are a kitchen on your right and a polished cement corridor on your left that leads to the remaining two bedrooms.

The first bedroom is an intimate single room with bed beside picture windows overlooking the cinnamon estate. It has a mosquito net, chest, writing desk and attached bathroom with shower. Opposite is a second double room similar to the first, with a mosquito net, wardrobe, chest, attached bathroom with tub and shower, and sliding doors onto a deep balcony overlooking the cinnamon plantation.

From the guest kitchen there are doors leading onto a furnished breakfast terrace, with steps just beyond that going down to a small and interesting, though yet unfinished, contemporary sculpture gallery.
