Olanda Beach House
The villa itself is as generously furnished as the garden, with the main house sporting a deep wraparound timber-pillared veranda, typical of its Dutch colonial origins, providing yet more stunning locations for enjoying the sea views. Almost unnoticeably situated between the main house and the dining pavilion is a swimming pool that mirrors the verdancy of the villa’s lawn and reaches out towards the sea under the shade of the comb-like leaves of coconut palms high above that attempt, unsuccessfully, to roof its placid expanse. A wide shallow section – great for little paddlers and adult wallowers – is in full view of the veranda and dining pavilion that’s furnished with candy-striped sofas, rattan rocking chairs and a formal dining table for ten.
Olanda’s five spacious ensuite bedrooms are split between the main house and a side annexe just a few footsteps across the lawn, where two of the rooms feature their own private balcony or terrace looking directly out to sea. In the main house, a cavernous, scarlet-hued living room with three big daybeds comes with cable TV and a DVD player, whilst a games room with pool table adjoins the open-sided dining terrace.
The villa has a staff of four, including a cook, to make life easy (groceries are on guest account) and the property is situated in Talpe within walking distance to two good beach restaurants if you need a change of scene. Whether feeling energetic of slothful, sociable or solitary, there are many places where you can comfortably absorb yourself at Olanda, even if you’re one of a crowd.

Olanda’s rooms are split between three buildings, two of which are adjoining. The main house, a refurbished colonial cottage accommodating a huge living room and three of the bedrooms stands regally at the centre of the garden. To the front, the lofty-ceilinged living room is cooled by ceiling fans whilst numerous doors allow light and breezes to flood inside. From the trio of crimson daybeds scattered with cushions you can see the ocean, whilst rattan lounge seating on the deep shaded veranda that wraps around the living room on three sides provides further sea views. An arched corridor to the rear of this building leads to the bedrooms and to the back garden.
Two of the bedrooms in the main house are doubles and one is a twin. The master bedroom – the most spacious of all – features multiple sets of doors that open directly onto the lawn beside the swimming pool and its ensuite comes with a built-in terrazzo bathtub that’s easily big enough for two. In most other respects all five bedrooms are similarly appointed, with air conditioning, ceiling fans, four-poster beds, wardrobes, writing desks and tropical semi-open bathrooms with hot water showers. In the second building, which sits to the far side of the garden, the two remaining double bedrooms offer private terraces furnished with built-in sofas for admiring the sea and garden views.
The open-fronted dining pavilion, completing Olanda’s trio of buildings, adjoins the main house via stepping stones over the lawn. Here, a lounging terrace at the front overlooks the swimming pool while to the rear is a dining table for ten. Behind this is a small games room with pool table and adjoining washroom. Right at the back is a fully-equipped kitchen with centre-island, large oven and plentiful fridge space for storing food and drinks.
To the front of the garden and overlooking the sea is an open-sided ambalama (gazebo) with soft linen drapes that float in the breeze. Featuring a large daybed topped with cushions, this, and the crow’s nest lounge reached via steps from the swimming pool are perfect places to while away lazy hours and succumb to the serenity of the sea.
