Layan Estate - Villa Omnia

  • Location: Bang Tao Beach
  • Number of bedrooms: 4
Relaxing by the pool or enjoying the enclosed tropical garden, far away from the bustle of Phuket’s major towns, this contemporary style modern villa is a great place for the family vacation. Villa Omnia is one of 18 villas (most being rather unimaginatively named Villa A through R) which make up the gated Layan Estate. Secure and secluded the estate is set back a few minutes’ drive from the pretty Layan Beach, after which it is named, and the resorts which line Bang Tao Beach. Finished in 2005, the Layan is one of the first of the new breed of modern villa complexes springing up on Phuket Island. Roads lined with mature tropical foliage including pretty fan palms connect the villas, giving each villa a degree of privacy.

Modern in construction with painted concrete walls, terrazzo floors, large patio doors throughout and wood-tiled roofs, each of the villas follows a familiar theme but with subtle variations in size and layout. From the outside, two huge wooden entrance doors form the focus for each villa, swinging back to reveal a large swimming pool set in lawns and surrounded by decking and terraces. Typically, either side of the entrance are the bright and airy living and dining rooms which open to the gardens through sliding patio doors. Villa Omnia is two-storey with four large bedrooms (a fifth bedroom, the owner’s master suite, is unavailable and closed off to guests). Picture-lined hallways connect the living spaces with the bedrooms and their ensuite bathrooms. Well equipped with WiFi, stereo, TVs, DVDs and a super-modern kitchen, the villa makes for a great holiday home for a large family or two.

Managed by the owners, the villa includes a full-time (except Sundays) housekeeper who lives within the staff quarters. She is responsible for cleaning, changing sheets and generally maintaining the villa. Duties can be extended to cooking (mainly Thai), provisioning (food is on guest account) and, for a few extra dollars, babysitting if you want to head out and enjoy the extensive choice of activities in the Laguna Phuket Resort complex.

The entrance to Villa Omnia is through large double wooden doors which open to reveal a delightful 20m x 5m swimming pool edged with teak-style decking and sand-washed terraces. At the far end sits a shady open sala (gazebo) with modern rattan furniture covered in cushions.

From the entrance a hallway heads off both left and right. To the left double doors slide back to reveal a bright dining room decorated with bold artwork and dominated by a large square dark veneer table with 12 chairs woven from hyacinth. Large glazed patio doors open onto the lawns and terrace of the garden giving the room an airy feel (even without the air conditioning) helped by a fan in the vaulted ceiling. Off the dining room is a large kitchen equipped with stainless steel Smeg appliances. An island bar makes for a great casual breakfast spot with kids getting their own cute pint-size table and chairs. A picture window looks over the lawns and a terrace decked out with outdoor table, chairs and a huge shady umbrella – the perfect place for a BBQ. On this side of the house is an upstairs queen bedroom with its own private teak deck, satellite TV and a big ensuite bathroom with separate tub and rain shower. Below are the staff quarters, including a laundry room.

Mirroring the dining room, on the right side of the house is an equally bright and airy lounge. Wide sofas and armchairs focus around a huge 50-inch flat screen satellite TV complete with DVD player and Bose surround-sound system (with iPod docking) which can also be switched to the garden. Adjacent is a kids’ playroom lined with baskets of toys and another TV/DVD. Patio doors lead from both rooms to the pool deck. Corridors lead to three further bedrooms – a queen with ensuite shower and private deck; a second queen which shares a bathroom (with tub and separate shower) with an adjacent twin room (with TV) – perfect for a family. Both rooms have patio doors leading to the pool and gardens. Rooms throughout are air conditioned.

[Note: A master suite upstairs and a downstairs study are the owner’s private quarters. They are locked and remain unavailable to guests.]
