Villa Phinisi

  • Location: Seminyak
  • Number of bedrooms: 5
If sailing the seas on a traditional Indonesian sailing boat and mooring at a tranquil lagoon on a tropical island appeals, then come and drop anchor at Villa Phinisi!

This modern villa beautifully combines the old with the new. Constructed using strong hard woods such as teak and ulin, and recycled timber from colourful Indonesian Phinisi boats (complete with embedded mollusc shells), the craftsmanship and detail found throughout the villa is no doubt inspired by these magnificent vessels which have sailed Indonesian waters for centuries. The villa has a very solid feel but the atmosphere is light and airy with whitewashed walls and sliding glass doors.

The villa’s pool resembles an inviting natural lagoon that one might stumble across while sailing the Archipelago; its cream terrazzo base is dotted with pieces of mother of pearl and abalone that glitter in the sunlight to resemble schools of fish. After a swim, lounge on the sunbeds and take in the serenity of your island paradise and the aroma of the sweet frangipani trees flowering overhead, or opt for some pampering in the villa’s private spa and massage room.

Comfortable and tastefully decorated, the five king-size bedrooms ensure a good night’s sleep, while the sunken lounge – complete with pull-down projector screen and glass panel looking into the pool – is a great entertainment space.

The friendly villa staff will happily assist with any requests, and be sure to make the most of the in-house chef who prepares home-style meals from a selection menu with provisions charged at cost plus a small service/shopping fee. The chef is available 10am-4pm and usually prepares the evening meal in advance but can stay into the evening for an extra charge.

If you do decide to ‘disembark’ the Phinisi, Seminyak’s infamous Jalan Laksmana (also known as Oberoi and Eat Street) is just a stone’s throw away, offering just about every cuisine under the sun.

Behind Phinisi’s walls is a hidden tropical oasis. Entering the villa, its generous garden and lagoon-style pool immediately evoke a sense of calm and tranquillity.

Palimanan stepping stones lead the way to the villa across a freshwater pond full of beautiful aquatic plants, bringing guests to the outdoor dining area which features a large lychee-wood dining table (seats 10).

Step down into the sunken living area and the uniqueness of the villa is revealed through eye-catching recycled timber floors and red tinted furniture embedded with shells. Here the voyage really begins.

This open-plan area comprises the lounge, informal dining and kitchen, taking on a cabin-like feel enhanced by a glass feature wall that looks straight into the pool and creates a sense of living below the water line. This is a light, bright and airy space but if guests elect for air conditioned comfort then retractable glass sliding doors easily separate the living area from the elements. A huge cabin-style sofa fronted by a long coffee table will comfortably accommodate the whole group to watch satellite TV or a movie on the pull-down projector screen; and the kitchen – well equipped and including a hot stone grill – is within easy reach for refreshments.

All five bedrooms are furnished with king-size beds, air conditioned, similar in size and design but feature individual touches through the use of different coloured recycled woods. Paintings of traditional sail boats, old photographs, maps and ‘antique’ shell necklaces adorn the walls providing an insight into traditional Indonesian living.

The master bedroom, with its four-poster bed, is located on the ground floor, a few steps up from the sunken living room but also accessible through glass sliding doors from the outdoor dining area. A red brick feature wall contrasts nicely against the whitewashed walls, dark timber floors and recycled timber doors. The ensuite bathroom features twin basins, twin showers and a large bathtub all made from grey Javanese stone.

A solid wooden staircase leads to the three upstairs bedrooms which open out onto separate timber decks furnished with sunbeds and overlooking the pool and garden. The tiled ensuite bathrooms have twin stone basins and a single shower (one with bath).

The fifth bedroom is found in the separate single-storey pavilion on the other side of the pool which also houses the spa and massage room (two tables) and gym.
