Baan Phulay is one of just a few Thai-owned villas on Samui and this shines through in its design, which draws heavily on traditional concepts both in terms of architectural style and interior touches. Although minimally furnished, wood features prominently inside and out, giving the villa an established feel. Most of the furniture comes from the north of Thailand where local craftsmen use natural materials like rattan and water hyacinth, lending charm and a strong sense of the owner's heritage. Another Thai feature is to house each room in a separate pavilion. This allows guests to choose their space depending on their mood and the dynamics of the group. Baan Phulay is the perfect base for beach and poolside pursuits, both are a constant draw and right on your doorstep. Your holiday routine could easily revolve around sunshine and good food. The villa is not over-staffed, but this suited the relaxed ambience of the place. Things were kept clean and tidy and the villa manageress was always on hand to take care of our requests and queries. The villa’s suggestion menu is extensive and with the option of a full-time chef (at additional cost) to prepare snacks and meals, culinary delights played a significant role in our stay. For al fresco meals, the dining table can be moved out onto the lawn or deck in the evenings, and this is when you really appreciate the privacy at this villa. Despite Samui's general popularity, this particular stretch of beach has no hotels, restaurants or bars close by to disturb your peace. This makes Baan Phulay perfect for families or groups looking for a more personal escape, although with a car you're still within easy reach of shopping, food and entertainment options if you feel inclined. Those happy to stay in can make use of comprehensive AV facilities, while the many terraces provide the ideal spot for a book and a snooze.

Baan Phulay's dramatic entrance is framed by traditional Thai wooden doors that usher you into a verdant garden housing four separate pavilions. In the first pavilion on the right are three bedrooms. The two comfortable, double guest bedrooms downstairs would be ideal for kids with full AV facilities and rain showers in the ensuite bathrooms. Upstairs, a more decorative master bedroom has a large landing outside with a fitness treadmill, while inside the bedroom itself a centrally placed king-size bed is nicely complemented with a wooden dressing table, attractive Asian wall art and a balcony with superb views. A walk-in dressing area connects to the spacious bathroom, which also has an indulgent tub.

The second two-storey pavilion contains the living room downstairs and another master bedroom upstairs. This bedroom also has a large sand-washed terrace with reclining wooden chairs, plus an inviting four-poster, king-size bed, as well as a spacious dressing area with fitted wardrobes and an ensuite bathroom with a choice of indoor and outdoor bathing. The living area downstairs is an ideal evening retreat with a large plasma screen TV with surround-sound system, comfortable water hyacinth furniture and an attached guest bathroom, useful if you're entertaining visitors.

In front of the first two buildings, a pair of single-storey pavilions are separated by wooden pathways that run over calming water features down to a lawn. A two-person wooden massage sala on the right would make the ideal meditation spot. Both lower pavilions face directly onto the tempting pool and sun deck. The one on the left houses another master bedroom with a grand ensuite bathroom and huge tub, plus a four-poster, king-size bed, day sofa and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that open on three sides onto the deck and garden.

The fourth pavilion contains the dining room, kitchen and day lounge. The fully fitted kitchen is small but includes a breakfast bar, while the teak dining table seats up to ten people and can be moved onto the deck if for al fresco meals. A Chinese-influenced, carved wooden cabinet opens to reveal another satellite receiver and DVD for perpetual entertainment.

The 12m blue-tiled infinity pool lies directly in front of two pavilions and is surrounded by a large wooden sun deck with six sun loungers and umbrellas. In front of the swimming pool a short expanse of lawn has steps down to a narrow, secluded section of Lipa Noi beach.
