Pooja Kanda

From your own little rocky hillock just inland from Koggala, soak up the serenity of this wonderful jungly location as monkeys swing overhead and birds twitter loudly in the trees. Moss-encrusted boulders, fern-covered rocks and mature hardwood trees envelope the house and give it a woodland feel. The garden is more than two acres in extent, much of it running wild except for a few dappled pathways. On the lawn at the front of the house a tall jackwood tree is adored by scampering squirrels who provide entertainment as you relax in the comfy chairs on the airy front verandah. To the rear is an inviting turquoise swimming pool built into the rocky hillside and surrounded by tropical vegetation.

Antique furniture gives character to the house whilst its design reflects the Dutch in Ceylon; tall arched doorways, pillared columns, wide wraparound verandahs and high ceilings are features throughout. Three bedrooms lead off from a first floor balcony which is enhanced by hidden nooks for curling up with a good book whilst the other two bedrooms are on the ground floor a short walkway away from the pool. There’s a large open-plan living and dining area that spills onto the front verandah, whilst a small air conditioned TV room with cushioned seating houses a large wide-screen TV and DVD player.

Although the house is completely private on its hilltop, its ambient village setting mean that local sounds drift softly up on the breeze; listen out for the melody of the bread van, for the cries of the fish sellers or of the laughter of children playing nearby. Better still, wander down the driveway to experience it with your eyes as well as your ears, or travel a little further into the busy coastal village of Habaraduwa for a visit to its bustling market (Wednesdays).

Pooja Kanda is fully-serviced by a small staff team who clean and tidy. The cook will make breakfast and any other meal on request, although the kitchen is equipped with everything for self-catering and the staff can shop for you if required (provisions on guest account).

Stone steps take you from the driveway up towards the house. As you cross over the sun-dappled lawn you enter the house via a deep twin-pillared verandah with comfortable seating. A set of four high arched doors take you through from this verandah into a spacious living area that stretches the width of the house. At either end of the living area are single arched doorways leading onto two side verandahs that reach towards the pool and the back of the house.

To the rear of the living area, separated only by a low half-wall, are a dining room with seating for six and a small office space with staircase leading to the three upstairs bedrooms. To the right of the dining area is an air conditioned TV Room, whilst to the back is a guest toilet and large equipped kitchen that overlooks the swimming pool.

Also at the rear of the house and across a small courtyard from the dining area are two ground floor bedrooms suitable as a family suite. The master bedroom is to the left and is a big room with four-poster antique bed, writing desk, wardrobe, views of the jungly garden and access onto the back verandah that leads to the pool. The ensuite bathroom has been recently modernised and features a tub, a rain shower and washbasin. Beside this bedroom is a small double room ideal for children. This room also has access onto the rear verandah and a new bathroom with shower finished in smooth polished cement.

On the first floor are three similarly sized queen-bedded rooms connected by a balcony that circles this upper floor. The first bedroom to be reached has doorways onto the front verandah and also to a private side seating area from where you can watch passing monkeys and birds. The bed is a concrete-based four-poster draped with mosquito netting whilst the white tiled bathroom has a shower, bidet and twin washbasins.

The remaining two bedrooms open either onto the front or rear balcony and are identical in size and design. They also have four-poster concrete based beds, a second verandah door and small white-tiled bathroom with shower and twin sinks.
