Villa Puri Sayan
Villa Puri Sayan sits high on this ridge of land favoured by some of Bali’s most luxurious hotels and exclusive retreats, including Amandari, Four Seasons, and Kayumanis. Facing west into the long-setting sun, the views of the rice terraces, jungle and distant volcanoes are vast and, unlike many other crowded ‘Kodak moment’ spots in Bali, they are all yours.
After giving you a few minutes to absorb the awesome vista, the villa staff will welcome you like personal family guests – which indeed you almost are! The owner of Puri Sayan lived in the property for 15 years, and still chooses to stay here when there are no guests. Oozing rustic charm, this graceful, shingle-roofed, three-bedroom hideaway has been nurtured, nourished and lovingly furnished with exotic objets d’art collected from the owner’s travels. The staff are faithful retainers who have become part of the family and treat their guests as such; fresh food is prepared daily (charged at cost) by the very competent Balinese cook after discussing your preferences.
Puri Sayan is a place for total relaxation, suitable for couples, groups of friends or families with older children. The air is fresh, the sky is big, and Ubud town is just far enough away to make it a mission to venture out. It is a very tempting option just to stay in and enjoy the comfortable surroundings, which include the beautiful free-form jungle-style pool perched on the edge of the gorge, a wide sun-terrace and a plethora of quirky and snug places to sit, read, or massage the afternoon away. Why would anyone want to leave?

Puri Sayan is accessed via a security gate leading to a parking area and a pathway bordered by coconut palms and tropical plants. The villa’s front door opens into a circular living room (9m diameter) with conical roof above a polished parquet floor and large French windows showing off the magnificent view. Furnished with a Kartini sofa upholstered in the famous Balinese chequered poleng cloth, lazy chairs, antique chests and woodcarvings; alcoves loaded with books add to the homely ambience while an iPod dock provides a hi-tech touch. At the back of the living room is a simple kitchen and service bar. Steps lead down from the front of the living room to a stone terrace surrounding the pool. Ferns and hanging plants cascade into the water and ethnic statues fill the garden, while a dining table (seats 8) rests to one side under a pergola draped in red passion flowers.
To the left of the living room short flights of stairs lead to two of the air conditioned bedrooms. Upstairs, the master bedroom is draped in brightly hued Indian saris that cast shades of coloured light throughout the room. A doorway next to the king-size bed leads to an expansive ensuite bathroom with a rain shower and a central circular skylight that creates a unique Turkish-bath effect. Sliding doors in the bedroom open onto an awning-covered deck (there is just no escaping that incredible view); to the side is an outdoor bathtub and elevated yoga area designed for the perfect sun salutation. The downstairs room has two double beds, a 42-inch flat-screen TV/DVD player and a small bathroom with rain shower finished in blue terrazzo. Double doors lead out to a small stone terrace with a shady garden courtyard and a cushioned relaxation pavilion.
To the right of the living room is a passageway leading to a charming jade-green guest bathroom with rain shower, which is shared with bedroom number three – an opium den in red and gold, accessed by antique Balinese doors and ornately furnished with a Chinese king-size four-poster. Louvre doors open out to a small and private timber deck at the secluded end of the pool.
