Majapahit Beach - Villa Raj

Not many villas offer a pool that creeps into the villa itself (ok the villa's twin, Villa Nataraja, next door does). Sit in the refreshing water out of the sun and enjoy the company of friends or family with the huge patio doors folded back to ease in the breezes. Set in the centre of a delightful garden surrounded by traditional Balinese red brickwork walls and lined with all manner of tropical plants, the 12m pool complete with Jacuzzis, one set inside the villa’s lounge, connects the lawns with the two storey villa. Sun beds litter the grass and a pleasant corner balé (gazebo) is perfect for enjoying sundowners. The doors fold back to create an attractive open feel to the living and dining areas off which are two of the three double bedrooms. An open staircase leads to the third. Vibrant paintings lift dark wood and rattan furniture, historic photos show a bygone Bali era and traditional statues add colour. Although not old (built 2005) Majapahit Beach – Villa Raj has a pleasant aged feel, not dissimilar to a Tuscan villa, with deep wooded floorboards and sepia walls. The net result is intimate and cosy.

Four almost identical villas make up the Majapahit Beach Estate. Two (villas Samudra and Maya) are absolute beachfront and command sea views, whilst two are set back within walled gardens. The 3-bedroom (all ensuite) Majapahit Beach – Villa Raj is one of the latter (Villa Nataraja being the mirror twin). Out of the carved garden gateway and down high bricked lanes, reminiscent of traditional Bali villages is the sea and a small shared sundeck area complete with loungers and a shrine decked in black and white checked poleng. Here enjoy watching the surfers on the reef by the point.

There is a team of staff running the estate. Some staff – cook, cleaners and butlers - are dedicate to a specific villa, some are shared – chef, 24-hour security, masseurs and car/driver. The car and spa services are paid for on a usage basis. Provisioning can be done by the chef on guests account for a small fee. A priced restaurant menu is available although guests can choose whatever they wish (subject to availability!)

Guests who book five nights or more at Majapahit Beach Villas are treated to a complimentary trip aboard the villas’ private traditional Balinese fishing boat (max 6 people) to idyllic snorkelling spot, The Blue Lagoon. The boat is also available for other fishing and sight-seeing trips for a reasonable fee.

Majapahit Beach – Villa Raj is housed in one, two-storey pavilion. On the top storey is the large master bedroom accessed by an open cantilevered stairs (not suitable for young children). A wall of timber ends at the top dominating the bedroom entrance. King bedded the master suite highlight is the floor to ceiling doors that slide back to reveal a large wide balcony with pleasant views of the surrounding fields of tapioca and chillies and the surf beyond. A desk and TV with DVD (no satellite channels) complete the furnishings. Round the back of the bedroom a rear balcony connects a corner bath/shower with the basins all in black lava stone. Bamboo screens maintain just enough privacy.

At the bottom of the stairs is a huge living and dining space with giant patio doors which fold right back letting the swimming pool edge into the room. Comfy sofas and teak tables make for a pleasant sitting area with an eclectic mix of art and collectables. A TV (with satellite channels) and DVD system sits in the corner. Set back is the dining table (seating for 6 to 8) with deep rattan chairs. Two double bedrooms wing the living room through beautifully ornate doors, each has patio doors that lead onto the lawns. Sunken baths with overhead showers in semi-open bathrooms again of black stone with teak trim are set to the rear. All the bedrooms and living areas are air-conditioned. Housed at the back of the villa is a small separate area is a small, simple kitchen mainly used by the staff.

The gardens include an outdoor pool shower and changing room and two pleasant bales (gazebos) deck out in checked cushions with traditional alang alang thatched roofs. One is set up as a day bed - perfect for a massage (extra) or for hiding from the midday sun whilst the other is an informal lounge area for drinks and possibly outdoor dining. Sun loungers spot the lawns.
