Villa Bugis Seminyak - Villa Rama

Rama, or Maryada Purushottama, is a popular figure in Hinduism – the lord of virtue and self control. Not characteristics found in many Seminyak-bound holidaymakers perhaps! And why should they be when you’re staying at a villa right in the heart of the action?

Villa Rama is a little oasis where you can relax after a draining shopping trip or a big night out. The open-air living area is a comfortable spot to lounge and enjoy movies on the large plasma TV or play Wii games, whilst the swimming pool (9 x 3.5m) and surrounding garden with its elegant thatched balé (gazebo) provides a taste of the tropics. The kitchen, situated in a second open-air balé beside the pool, creates a real Club Tropicana ambience – all you need is George Michael sipping cocktails as he floats by on the villa’s airbed to complete the picture.

The property’s main structure houses the lounge/dining area as well as the master bedroom, it has a traditional Balinese high alang alang (thatched) roof – as do the two guest bedroom bungalows – creating a charming feel to this otherwise contemporary-built villa. Villa Rama is one of a complex of villas under the same management company, therefore a full range of staff are on hand should you require their assistance. Unless instructed otherwise, however, cooking and cleaning staff will only visit the villa briefly to cook breakfast and tidy up each day which gives guests more privacy than is often afforded in Balinese villas.

Villa Rama leans more towards self-catering than an uber-luxurious, staffed and catered residence, but with plenty of restaurants only a short walk away there’s no need to bring your apron – although visiting Australians won’t want to pass up the opportunity to throw a few shrimps on the kitchen’s built in barbeque. If you do want to cook in, the villa staff will shop for you at the nearby Bintang supermarket and clean up the mess before you’ve finished sleeping it off.

Perhaps the spirit of Rama is still living on within the island’s gracious Balinese hosts.

Villa Rama consists of five structures all with charming traditional thatched roofs. From the entrance gate you have a choice of walkways leading into the property: either around the pool passing a garden balé with daybed and a second larger balé which houses the well-equipped open-air kitchen (complete with poolside barstools), or via the verandas of the two guest bedrooms which touch the swimming pool and are joined by a wooden bridge in front of a stone water feature in the form of a Buddha’s face.

Both walkways lead to the open-air living and dining area. Like the smaller buildings, the living area has a high, wood-beamed ceiling showing the underside of the thatching and its bamboo supports. Ceiling fans supply a breeze above an L-shaped banana-leaf couch and wooden daybed positioned on the light terrazzo floor facing a dark wood unit built into the length of the rear wall. This unit houses a large plasma-screen TV with satellite channels, DVD/CD player, iPod docking and a Nintendo Wii entertainment console. Bright, Bali-inspired paintings adorn the walls beside a glass-topped dining table which seats eight.

The three bedrooms are all air conditioned and dominated by queen-sized four-poster beds with mosquito nets. All have dark wood bedside cabinets, matching built-in wardrobes and safety deposit boxes. The ensuites are also identical with open-air standing showers and marble-topped vanities. The master bedroom stands adjacent to the living area. It features a flat-screen TV and DVD player and a veranda which looks onto a small garden. The two guest rooms enjoy views of the pool through their sliding glass doors and from the all-weather chairs on their verandas.
