25 Rampart Street

Having a privileged location in the fort overlooking the undulating grassy ramparts of the Aeolus Bastion and a little Buddhist shrine, 25 Rampart Street is a hugely characterful, very spacious early nineteenth century English merchant’s house that feels just like a family home. The property’s facade hides behind a blush of exotic pink bougainvillea that hugs the house and continues around the back where a colourful tropical garden with a serene grassy lawn shaded by frangipani trees features a 10m swimming pool and Jacuzzi visited by lots of colourful exotic birds.

Each of Rampart Street’s comfortable bedrooms is located on the first floor along with a huge breezy Living Room that boasts panoramic views out over the ramparts towards the ocean. This panorama, a rarity in many fort villas and the reason why the owners felt obliged to buy it, is especially beautiful at sunset when the crimson sun descends directly over the sparkling sea. It also provides endless privileged windows into fort life; evening cricket games played out on the ramparts, couples huddled together under umbrellas on the horizon and walkers from all religions and walks of life enjoying the peaceful scene. The same magnificent views can be enjoyed from the raised bathroom of the Master Bedroom affording you a particularly atmospheric bathing experience!

Throughout this wonderful property, period features such as polished wooden floorboards, high exposed timber ceilings, archways, columns and a fantastic antique staircase were carefully preserved when the present owners lovingly renovated the property six years ago (2009). Cosy, modern furnishings and Dutch period antiques perfectly complement the evocative ambiance. With its generous garden, large Living Room that adjoins two of the bedrooms, two helpful staff as well as the choice of self-catering or being catered for, 25 Rampart Street is highly recommended for families with kids who will love the property’s relaxing ambiance, historic location and generosity of space.

As you enter 25 Rampart Street through a tiny front garden shaded by wisteria and bougainvillea plants, you pass through tall teak doors into an entrance foyer decorated with plants, pots and a birdcage aesthetically suspended from the ceiling. From here you enter a Lounge with cosy cushioned seating that adjoins a bijou Library whose shelves brim with novels, coffee table books, National Geographic magazines and travelogues. Just beyond these two rooms is the breezy Dining Room open to the outdoors on two sides, where the majestic heavy wooden table takes centre stage and seats up to ten people comfortably. Just outside is a little verandah that leads to a basic kitchen, a pretty breakfast pavilion and a lush garden featuring a 10m swimming pool and Jacuzzi.

As you ascend from the Dining Room to the first floor via the antique wooden staircase you come to the Living Room, an expansive space furnished with squashy sofas and rattan chairs overlooking the panoramic ocean scene. A desk in one of the front alcoves is a wonderful place to sit, contemplate the views and even record in a novella the tranquil fort vista. From here a door leads to the air conditioned Master Bedroom which features a comfortable four poster bed and double doors into a raised en-suite bathroom with luxuriously large bathtub and overhead rain shower.

A large air conditioned twin bedroom is reached from the stairway or the Living Room and comprises two double beds, a baby cot, cupboards and a cabinet with a TV and DVD player, ideal for children and big enough to double up as a playroom. Another door leads into an open-sided bathroom with double vanities overlooking the back garden and pool, and a separate shower room with bathtub. The twin bedroom shares this bathroom with a further split-level double air conditioned bedroom, reached down a little rickety staircase to its own wonderful balcony furnished with rattan chairs. This bedroom is quite small, but is complemented by an adjoining dressing room with wardrobe to comfortably store any belongings.
