Red Palms

  • Location: Umalas-Kerobokan
  • Number of bedrooms: 3
If you elect to stay at Red Palms, strive to arrive after dark, because when you awake the following morning, you will be blown away by the sights, sounds and scenery at the bottom of a magical garden.

The approach to Red Palms – just 4km from Seminyak’s fancy cafes and boutiques with lower-case names – offers no clue to the peaceful haven that rests behind the villa’s high garden walls. Enter through the huge Balinese doors and you’ll find yourself in a different world, which blends history, culture and nature with lashings of comfort, romance, tranquility privacy and – most unexpectedly – home-cooked pizzas!

Named after the scarlet ‘lipstick’ or ‘sealing wax’ palms, which grace its gorgeous tree-and-orchid-filled garden, the villa is resourcefully integrated into the contours of a valley alongside a fast-flowing river. It is comprised of a living and dining antique joglo pavilion with a guest kitchen, an open-air bar incorporating a staff service kitchen, a plunge pool and swimming pool linked by a tumbling waterfall, and three bedrooms housed in a two-storey sleeping pavilion. Also poolside is a balé (relaxation pavilion) and a very precious feature: the wood-fired pizza oven.

This is a villa and garden that dares to be different. It was conceived, built and furnished with love, and due to the tender nurturing of its owner it has continued to evolve and blossom, season after season. Here groups of friends, and families with older children, will appreciate a cherished collection of reclaimed-teak furnishings, antiques and fascinating Asian artefacts. From the Buddhist-monk-themed artwork to the pair of stone cows that guard the pool to a dragon at the foot of a bed, this is eclecticism with exquisite taste.

The charm of Red Palms is complemented by a team of thoughtful staff including security, a cook, housekeeping and waiting staff who will cater to all your personal needs whether sunset cocktails and pizza on the pool deck, or a formal dinner in the joglo. The groceries will be purchased on your behalf (on guest account), and a suggestion menu is provided to help you plan your meals.

The living and dining pavilion presides over the garden. It is built around the core of an ornately-carved joglo – an antique traditional timber house from Java. Open-sided and cooled by ceiling fans, this charming pavilion presents cane sofas and chaise longues, a large desk, and a hula-inspired dining table for six designed by the owner. In one corner is an open-plan kitchen for guest use and a breakfast bar furnished with two stools.

A walk through the garden brings guests past the pizza oven and cabana-styled bar to the shallow upper tier of the swimming pool and the Master Bedroom, which is positioned on the upper floor of the sleeping pavilion, with a large veranda overlooking the river. The other two bedrooms, (the Garden Room and River Room) also have their own verandas and are positioned below the master on the lower tier of the garden, accessed via a flight of stone steps.

Each romantic air conditioned bedroom is furnished with a queen bed, decorated with antique artefacts and equipped with a flat-screen TV and DVD player. Each is characterised by its own bold colour scheme theme and each presents different furnishings and a different ambiance. The Master and Garden Rooms both showcase majestic beds built upon raised platforms with palimanan stone pillars at each corner. The River Room, entered from a private garden beside the river, presents a carved bed. Each ensuite bathroom is fitted with a sunken tub and an open-air rainshower in a private courtyard or (in one case) a rustic bamboo corral.

There are two pool decks, one on each level, guaranteed to catch the rays of the sun at different times of day. A pair stone staircases flank the waterfall on either side. The balé has a tapered conical thatched roof above a marble floor. Fan-cooled, it is furnished with an antique daybed with a wooden canopy, and two cushioned wooden armchairs. Here, guests will be soothed by the constant sound of water in motion, while a thick glass safety wall ensures an unbroken view of the river, a towering fig tree, a grove of giant bamboo, a cow shed and a little temple on the opposite bank.
