Samui Sunset Villas - Villa Rose
Villa Rose provides convenience over absolute luxury. The three second-floor bedrooms (two doubles, one twin) are comfortable but not extravagant and the addition of a compact studio annex with a private entrance on the lower floor means singles or independent-minded teenagers can do their own thing. Those staying in the guest bedrooms, which share a bathroom, may be a little envious of the occupants of the master room who get their own spacious bathing space, complete with an indulgent jacuzzi tub looking out over the bay.
In keeping with the functional theme, there's no army of staff in constant attendance. A maid cleans daily and the villa manager is on call to take care of special requests. Indolent souls do have the option of hiring a cook to prepare their meals, but proximity to local shops, a fresh market and a choice of restaurants in Bang Rak means that with transport, self-sufficiency is also an easy option. With the diverse delights of Chaweng just around the corner, this is also a great base from which to dine out, shop and party.

After walking up steep steps and through the polished steel front door you find yourself in a large living area, almost expecting a robot to roll up and ask you if you would like your martini shaken or stirred. A welcoming entrance area has a guest washroom on the left and a long, built-in desk on the right. Polished cement floors are scattered with rattan rugs and floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto the expansive pool deck, not only bringing in the natural light but also the superb views over the coast and ocean.
A flat-screen Samsung TV and DVD player sit opposite the comfortable, L-shaped cream leather sofa and wooden coffee table. A marble-topped dining table seats six comfortably, served by an open-plan, fully equipped kitchen (with appliances including an Electrolux coffee machine, rice cooker and microwave) with brown granite tiles and a central breakfast island with built-in oven and hob.
Cantilevered stairs take you up to the bedrooms – all air conditioned and with their own flat-screen TVs for bed-time viewing, and all with sliding glass doors that open onto a small balcony with the same stunning sea views as the living room below. The master bedroom, with queen-size bed and leather headboard, features a spacious ensuite bathroom with oval jacuzzi bath tub also looking out over the ocean. The other two bedrooms (one with queen-size bed, one twin-bedded) share a bathroom with shower. At the entrance to the bathroom, built-in wardrobes provide storage for the two guest bedrooms.
The barbecue terrace is behind the kitchen and connects with the main pool deck. Outdoor stairs run down from there to the studio with its own living room/ kitchen, bedroom and ensuite bathroom. The kitchen is modest but adequate. The cosy living area has a soft, suede sofa and flat-screen TV, and the attached 'wet room' features a shower, wc and basin. The studio has its own private entrance.
Back upstairs the attractive pool deck surrounds a 10m infinity pool and jacuzzi, with six synthetic rattan sun loungers and a six-seater dining table, perfect for a long cold drink while you gaze over the headland to the small islands beyond.
