Villa Sabana
Set within almost three thousand square metres of riverside grounds in one of Bali’s most charming coastal communities, five-bedroom Villa Sabana comprises four spacious buildings of contemporary tropical architecture with a double-storey main residence as its majestic centre-piece. Throughout the superbly designed and calming property – built in 2008 – the grace of Bali and the owner’s unique style is reflected. Teak flooring and coffered ceilings contrast with white Palimanan stone walls, while balconies and sitting porches have been thoughtfully positioned to capture the stunning backdrop of rice fields and distant mountains. Modern custom-designed furnishings have been imported from across the region, while Asian antiques, artefacts and contemporary art works are tastefully displayed throughout.
All this is supported and enhanced by a team of ten fully trained staff, experienced and highly adept in their individual roles, yet personifying the warmth and hospitality of the Balinese. Noted for their friendliness and devotion to making your stay as relaxing as possible, the staff are particularly good with children of all ages.
Villa Sabana provides a round-the-clock service of four butlers who are happy to attend to all your needs, whether its fixing a cocktail or tracking down a favourite DVD; an amiable full-time manager and exceptionally talented in-house chef, renowned for her delicious Asian and Western cuisine – anything from Indonesian delicacies like spicy snapper and tuna steamed in banana leaf, to Mexican tortillas and die-hard kids’ favourites. Breakfast is complimentary, but all other provisions for meals are charged at cost price.
This peaceful hideaway – as suitable for groups and couples as it is for families – also makes a great base for exploring Bali, starting with a surfing beach just ten minutes’ drive away. And the villa’s seven-seater car is complimentary for up to ten hours a day (petrol on guest account) to transport you on your adventures. All in all, Villa Sabana offers five-star pampering, but without the confines of a five-star hotel.

The four detached buildings that constitute Villa Sabana are perfectly spaced; their rooms offering a flowing grace and ample privacy. The main residence is the largest of the four and directly faces the pool, gardens and rice fields.
On the ground floor, the expansive dining room is dominated by a teak table seating 12, and serviced by an adjoining ultra modern, compact kitchen. Casual dining is also available on the patio, where a shaded table seats six. Like everywhere in the villa, glass and teak sliding doors allow natural light to flow in, while maximising the idyllic views. Thrown open, cooling breezes can enter, while air conditioning and ceiling fans provide more controlled temperatures.
Four beautifully furnished bedrooms are housed in this pavilion: each with its own character, a spacious porch with daybed and luxurious ensuite bathroom (all but having indoor and outdoor areas), featuring deep ceramic bathtubs and walk-in glass-encased showers. Accessed through an elegant lobby on the ground-floor, two child-orientated twin bedrooms (The ‘Girls’ room featuring four-poster beds) are also furnished with indoor daybeds for additional young guests. Upstairs, the master and king bedrooms, both king-bedded, are situated either end of a long, timbered balcony topped with high, split-rattan ceilings. Complete with intimate sitting area, this plantation-style balcony offers a wonderful spot to view the sun set over the rice fields and Bali’s sacred Mount Agung in the distance.
Located in a separate single-storey pavilion, the fifth bedroom, or Chinese Room, boasts a large stone porch and private gardens. Furnished with a king-size bed, this room also has an indoor–outdoor ensuite bathroom. The nearby, stand-alone family room, one of two entertainment areas, contains a 47- inch flat-screen TV, DVD player and a children’s play space. IPod docking stations are available in main sitting and dining areas of the villa and WiFi is accessible throughout.
The lawned gardens are dominated by an 18 x 4m infinity-edge pool, at either end of which are traditional-style gazebos. The largest, the open-air living room, provides a 44-inch plasma TV, DVD player, plus table for poolside dining. The smaller gazebo is cushioned for poolside relaxation – or perhaps a massage. Below the pool, a lawn edged with bamboo, coconut and palm trees, stretches down to a fenced-off river.
