Villa Saldana

  • Location: Koggala
  • Number of bedrooms: 3
The frothy rollers that rumble and roar as they journey towards the golden shoreline just beyond Villa Saldana are the prime focus of this striking three-bedroom south-coast villa. Saldana’s raised timber terrace pays tribute to this oceanic setting offering an exceptional stage from which to sit back and gaze at the drama of the sea. Instead of a wall between the garden and the beach, a fence provides security without breaking up the ocean vistas, and it’s become a highway for tiny scurrying squirrels and a stopping point for electric blue kingfishers that play starring roles in these serene sea scenes.

The name of the villa – Saldana – speaks of fertile Spanish plains, but it was not this European country that inspired the villa’s name; it’s actually a combination of the names of the owners’ two sons, Danyal and Salman. And it was the Dutch, whose presence in Ceylon three centuries ago left such a lasting impression on this island, who inspired the villa’s design. Villa Saldana is a new build but its Dutch columns, high timber ceilings and intricately crafted fretwork above doorways say otherwise, and its smattering of antique and reproduction furniture evidently harks back to the era of these European colonialists. Complementing this striking style are contemporary, soft sofas, a fabulous kitchen and luxe bathrooms with tropical open-to-the-sky showers.

Villa Saldana comes with a swimming pool with an infinity edge that seems to effortlessly extend into the sea beyond the grassy lawn. The villa has two master suites - both of which have sea-view terraces – and a third twin bedroom that’s nestled into the middle of the house. Modern conveniences include a satellite LCD TV and a Blu-ray DVD player plus a good internet connection and stereo. A small staff team look after guests at Saldana, which is ideally set up as a cosy romantic retreat, or for a family, or even for a pair of couples. Saldana boasts a fabulous location on a three-kilometre stretch of beach that’s perfect for walks and jogs. It is also close to Koggala’s many natural attractions and only a fifteen-minute drive from Galle.

A central open-plan living space makes up the heart of the villa, and all bedrooms plus the kitchen lead off from here. To the front of the room is a relaxed seating area and a dining table for six placed to peep out through three sets of doors to the rolling ocean waves beyond. To the rear are a white squashy sofa facing a flat-screen TV, and a writing desk that scenically overlooks the swimming pool. The room is fan-cooled and has numerous doors onto the side garden that allow the sea breezes to infiltrate and cool.

The two double bedrooms are situated to either side of the house and are identical in size, layout and design. Both bedrooms come with king-sized four-poster reproduction antique beds dressed in the finest cotton linen, a sofa seat, a wardrobe and an ensuite bathroom finished in smooth cement, terrazzo and stone with twin sinks and an open-air rain shower. Whilst both bedrooms boast equally great sea views, the western bedroom opens onto the pool terrace and the eastern bedroom onto a side garden.

The third bedroom is next to the entrance with a window that opens into the living room. This twin room comes with two four-poster single beds and a wardrobe plus an ensuite bathroom with single sink and open-air shower. All bedrooms are air conditioned and have ceiling fans.

The kitchen is set back from the living room and can be accessed by the staff via a second wet kitchen from the rear. It’s finished in terrazzo and stainless steel and is fully equipped for self-caterers, having an oven, microwave, hob and plenty of pots and pans.
