Villa Samuan

Villa Samuan is really two villas in one (Samuan Kalih and Samuan Siki) and as such benefits from having two of everything; two fully-furnished living rooms, two individual swimming pools and two equipped kitchens with the number of bedrooms between the two villas totalling five; there are even two master bedrooms and two twin rooms! Each of these villas sit either side of a courtyard bursting with bamboo, allowing two families holidaying together or one extended family or group of friends to feel private and self-contained but not to the extent that they feel estranged. Samuan in Balinese means ‘meeting place’, which is exactly what this villa feels like.

Opulence and elegance are two words that come to mind when describing Samuan, as timber wood panelling, polished hardwood floors, soaring dark wood roofs and oriental antiques enrich living spaces and heighten atmosphere, especially when all the lamps are soulfully turned on at night. Walls adorned with striking prints, photographs and posters provide a theatrical ambiance which is further enhanced by carved busts and painted mannequins, whilst soft furnishings in cream and grey call for calm. It feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of Seminyak’s upmarket shops, bars and restaurants, even though Jalan Laksmana or ‘Eat Street’ is only a five minute walk down the road.

To either end of the villa is a swimming pool encircled by ironwood timber decking topped with cushioned lounge chairs and daytime dining tables. Surprisingly spacious stretches of lawn shaded by coconut palms reach down to pavilions furnished with daybeds softened with cushions offering yet more spots to relax. A dedicated spa room tucked into a corner of the property means that treatments can be enjoyed peacefully and privately out of sight of the rest of the villa. An equipped kitchen is found to each side of the property for guests’ use, while the villa cook – just one of an efficient ten-strong staff team that takes care of the house – uses a separate service kitchen to prepare a wide selection of dishes at cost price.

Villa Samuan comprises two self-contained villa units, which can be rented separately or together. A courtyard brimming with bamboo and a passageway running alongside provide a link between these two units, one of which has three bedrooms and the other of which has two. Each comes with its own living and dining space, its own kitchen and its own garden with swimming pool, ironwood deck and garden pavilion.

A prominent feature of this property is the liberal use of wood, which provides an interesting backdrop for the interior décor where poster prints highlighting walls, stone busts topping side tables and soft earthy-toned furnishings hugging sofas feel instantly elegant and surprisingly serene. It’s the living areas that benefit most from this warm timber panelling; both come with squashy sofas, dining tables encircled by low-slung canvas chairs, flat-screen TVs and oriental cupboards concealing surround-sound stereo systems (the speakers are built into the ceiling) which play DVDs and can be attached to iPods.

Samuan’s five air conditioned bedrooms all come with flat-screen satellite-enabled TVs and ensuite bathrooms with tropical rain showers. There are two master bedrooms – one in each of the villa units – which benefit from spacious dressing rooms and large bathrooms with tubs. In addition to these two bedrooms there is another double as well as two twins (one in each unit) making the property highly suitable for two family groups.

Further living space can be found in the two pavilions at the end of each swimming pool, whilst just off each of the living rooms is a kitchen fitted with electric hob, microwave oven, fridge, water filter machine, kettle and toaster.
