Majapahit Beach - Villa Samudra

Perhaps the best thing about Majapahit Beach Villas, and by extension Villa Samudra (one of the cluster of four fully serviced luxury villas that make up Majapahit, the others being villas Maya, Nataraja and Raj), is its isolation. Standing on the absolute seafront timber deck that Villa Samudra calls its front door, with the spray from the waves teasing you slightly backwards with every crash, it’s easy to forget you don’t have this island all to yourself. Think Cathy and Heathcliff, wrapped in the drama of the wild and stormy Yorkshire moors … only translated onto the stark beauty of the black volcanic sand beaches and swirling waves of Ketewel, Bali.

Of course, this very isolation, Villa Samudra’s biggest positive, could also be its biggest negative. It really depends on how much you want to show off that teensy weensy bikini of your own, or whether you’re here for total rest and relaxation, an escape from the masses. Besides, Wuthering Heights wouldn’t have had anything like the comfort of Villa Samudra to boast of. With its three double ensuite bedrooms; a lounge/dining area that opens up completely onto the jacuzzi, 16m x 4m pool, tropical garden, the sea and the tiny neighbouring island of Nusa Lembongan beyond; a massage bale (gazebo) and an open air living/dining area – both within range of refreshing sea spray; poolside umbrellas and loungers and a private beachside deck with two massive daybeds, you’ll have a hard time choosing a spot to put your feet up.

Because put your feet up you really can. With your own private butler on hand 24/7; a private chef to do your cooking and grocery shopping (on guest account); a spa therapist to treat you in the privacy of your own villa (extra cost); and a handful of maintenance staff keeping you comfortable, you’ll be hard pressed to find a reason to leave Villa Samudra during your stay. If you do manage to drag yourself out, you will find a car and driver at your disposal (extra cost).

Guests who book five nights or more at Majapahit Beach Villas are treated to a complimentary trip aboard the villas’ private traditional Balinese fishing boat (max 6 people) to idyllic snorkelling spot, The Blue Lagoon. The boat is also available for other fishing and sight-seeing trips for a reasonable fee.

It’s easy, breezy living for those with a yen for ‘me time’.

Like its sister (Villa Maya) the spaces that make up Villa Samudra are very simple and airy in design, in spite of paying tribute to the traditions of Balinese art and the intricacies of Balinese Hindu symbolism. Each of the Majapahit villas is entered through traditional hand-carved wooden doors, behind which stands an ‘aling aling’ – a short wall designed to protect the property from malign influences (apparently evil spirits have great difficulty turning corners). Beyond these tricky corners, however, Villa Samudra is all about letting the sea views, and breezes, in.

The bottom floor of this two-storey villa is dominated by a living and dining area that can be opened up completely on each end, the back leading to a separate fully equipped service kitchen across a lotus fish pond, and the front to the pool via a jacuzzi that extends into the lounge area. Ceiling fans supplement cooling sea breezes as you laze about on rich jewel-coloured silk cushions amidst traditional wooden Balinese artefacts and local artwork.

Tiring of the views? Settle into a movie on the surround-sound entertainment system, or – horrors – do work courtesy of wireless high-speed Internet (at an additional cost). Or simply retire to one of the three fully air conditioned bedrooms, complete with individual entertainment systems, where oversized beds dressed in more jewel-coloured silks demand afternoon naps.

Two bedrooms downstairs, each opening onto a personal terrace facing the sea, flank the living area; one with oversize twin beds and one with a king-size bed. Both ensuite garden bathrooms feature two washbasins and a black terrazzo sunken bathtub and shower.

The master suite upstairs, however, is the one to duke it out for. The winding, floating staircase into the pitched roof is a Hollywood touch (though perhaps less Hollywood and more safety alert for small children and tipsy adults!). Beyond that you will find a bedroom similar in style to downstairs, although the ensuite bathroom consists of two separate outdoor areas – one with a bath, shower and twin basins, one with toilet and washbasin – linked by a timber walkway. A massive king-size bed is covered in regal black and red Chinese silk and crisp linen, while a teak writing desk in the corner almost makes you believe you have the next great Nobel-winning novel in you. But the main attraction? A lovely timber balcony overlooking the ocean and, it seems, the whole world.
