Villa Sancita

  • Location: Ubud
  • Number of bedrooms: 3
Driving through the luxuriant green surrounds and fresh air that Ubud is famous for is enough to gently slip you into holiday mode, and arriving at a villa designed to make the most of this serene environment is the next step towards a tranquil tropical getaway. Built with a modern elegance that takes full advantage of its idyllic location, Villa Sancita makes great use of space to cater for friends or families who wish to not only relax, but also to enjoy a variety of other holiday activities.

Minutes from the jostling streets of central Ubud, the owners of this three-bedroom villa certainly put some thought into creating a haven that feels miles from anywhere. Built into an incline above a small stream, step through to Sancita’s large entrance area and you are greeted with a mesmerizing scene. An open-plan, open-fronted living area brings the outside world in, while wooden decking and the infinity-edge pool transport you even more deeply into the tropical tapestry that lies beyond.

The villa’s two storeys of accommodation, along with a terraced garden below, bring a 180 degree panorama of the rice fields and coconut palms within view whether you are dining in, sunbathing by the pool, watching a DVD, reading a book by the fishpond or hiding out in your bedroom.

Built in early 2010, Villa Sancita has a contemporary feel. Large stone pillars and a central terrazzo stairway add a grand contrasting touch to the broader scenes of rural life. Plenty of activity can be found nearby however, as central Ubud is alive with markets, arts and clothing stores, bars, cafés and restaurants.

When it comes to dining, look no further than the in-house menu suggestions. Meals at Villa Sancita are divine thanks to the culinary prowess of the manager (provisions are on guest account). The in-house staff are all very friendly and truly know how to spoil you whilst also giving you the space you need to feel as though you are away from it all yet ‘right at home’.

Villa Sancita’s two-storey design maximises its land size and location, creating lots of usable space, indulging the villa with natural light throughout and providing all communal areas and bedrooms with a knee-bending view.

Hidden at the end of a long driveway, the large entrance area opens up into a comfortably sized living and dining room; the open-plan design and double-height ceiling taking full advantage of the majestic tropical view. An enclosed, fully equipped kitchen is well placed just off the dining room (where a six-seater glass-topped table shares the lovely views). The whole indoor area spills out onto a wooden deck, where two sun loungers and a table and chairs (seating four) sit above an 8m-long infinity pool. Extra decking at the far end of the pool is home to two more loungers and a coffee table.

Also on the ground floor is a fan-shaped den, hosting more comfy sofas arched to face a 32-inch flat-screen TV with a DVD player and Wii games console. Once again, the outdoor view is showcased through large Javanese stone pillars. A double guest bedroom with queen-size bed and a bathroom completes the ground floor of the villa.

A large terrazzo staircase leads up to the master bedroom (king-size bed) and double guest bedroom (queen-size bed), both with ensuite bathrooms and private balconies. All three bedrooms are equipped with fans and air conditioning and although splashed with artworks and photography from the owner’s travels, are quite simple in style. Being above the den, the master bedroom also boasts a curved wall with floor-to-ceiling views, along with a small study area.

Steps wind down from the deck to a terraced lawn area below the pool where a balé hovers above a fishpond and is surrounded by a well-manicured garden – just the place for a peaceful afternoon nap.
