Villa Saparua
There are a number of colonially-themed villas in Bali, all of which successfully bring history to life. What sets Saparua apart from the others, however, is that it has been designed – down to its very core – as an authentic reproduction of a colonial house. The Dutch owners built the villa with the intention to sell, but fell in love with it and decided to keep it for themselves. They are perfectionists who, every year, drive the entire length of Java seeking out treasures – such as the splendid, 200-year-old, beaten iron ceiling panels in the kitchen and dining room – to make their home more bona fide with each and every mission.
But it’s not only the antiques that make Saparua special. The two-storey, three bedroom property has been fitted with all the comforts of the 21st century including a high-tech kitchen, a state-of-the-art gym, a cosy sitting room and a well-planned office, complemented by WiFi internet access, satellite channel TVs, DVD players and a Nintendo Wii. The garden is dotted with giant, custom-designed, hand-carved stepping stones, while large volcanic stone blocks have been used for the retaining walls and balustrades adding an even more masculine strength to the dwelling. These enclose a sweet patch of lawn and a 17m free-form lap pool with a wall sculpture of Hindu deities at one end and custom tile-work beneath the water.
Saparua is ideal for a family or small groups of friends who love to relax and be inspired. The staff are a caring team, trained in-house and offering service from the heart as well as excellent home cooking from either a selection menu or according to request (provisions on guest account). As the villa is in a remote location, guests also have the use of a car and driver (included in price) for eight hours per day.

From its recycled ironwood floors, time-honoured barber’s chairs and bakelite telephones (all in working order) to its ceramic light switches and antique chandeliers, Villa Saparua captures the nostalgic architectural heritage of a bygone age. Styled after a plantation house, it is fitted with 20 original glass-panelled doors salvaged from an old colonial hotel in Surabaya.
The house is distinguished by a marble-floored verandah, which runs the full length of the building. Also on the ground floor is a spacious study with a desk, shelves of books and internet facilities; a sitting room; a dining area with a table for eight; a fully-equipped feature kitchen, and one of three air conditioned bedrooms. A sweeping staircase with a wrought iron banister, leads up to the remaining two bedrooms which are linked by a large, west-facing, open sitting area with a bar, and views that extend out to sea and up the rugged coastline.
The bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms are uniform in design, with padded antique king-size beds, silk wallpaper, heavy drapes, antique cabinets, and rice field and ocean views. The bathrooms are accessed by louvre doors, which are fitted with Kohler reproduction fixtures including high-backed, claw-footed porcelain baths and walk-in rain showers. The two upstairs bedrooms are equipped with TVs and DVD players. The downstairs bedroom, meanwhile, has a door directly into the air conditioned sitting room, which has a bay window and is furnished with comfortable arm chairs, tempting guests with a double recliner right in front of the 40-inch flat-screen TV/DVD player.
Although the open plan kitchen is ultra modern, it still merges perfectly with the antique feeling of the place. A very old, aptly named ‘Prometheus’ oven sits in the corner as a curiousity – in its day it would have undoubtedly been top of the ‘range’.
The gym is the only room at Saparua where you won’t find any antiques. This stand-alone pavilion in the garden is fully decked out for the ultimate work out with every conceivable machine, as well as air conditioning, a TV, audio facilities and a shower. And after a workout? What could be better than a swim in the 17m pool within the privacy of a gorgeously maintained walled garden?
