Villa Sebali

  • Location: Ubud
  • Number of bedrooms: 4
Staying at Villa Sebali gives you a lot of choice. To start with, there are four bedrooms to choose from — named Sky, Sunrise, Sunset, and Forest. You can slip off to Ubud with the villa’s car and driver or stay home and swim in the infinity pool, soak up the morning sun, take a walk through the rice fields, do your email, have a massage or beauty treatment (extra), watch a DVD, play ping pong or a board game, enjoy the garden, or read one of the good books found all around the house.

The villa is named after the village in which it is located. This is a particularly quiet and lovely part of the Ubud area, not yet commercially developed, and a little higher in elevation so the nights are cool from June to September. Most of the villagers are farmers and the village is surrounded by rice fields. The morning sounds you hear are birds and the distant voices of people working in the fields. The villa faces east into a jungle-filled river gorge.

Villa Sebali is well run by the conscientious villa manager, Dewa, who speaks good English and is on hand to help out as butler, concierge, and sometimes driver. The capable Ayu and an assistant will provide breakfast (included in the villa rate) and other meals from a priced suggestion menu. If you would like something that’s not on the menu, a small service charge is added to the cost of provisions. You are also welcome to self cater, with shopping assistance provided if you like. There is WiFi internet in the living and dining area and a mobile phone is available so you can stay in contact with the villa when you venture out.

Sebali’s British owners (who occupy the villa themselves from January through March) are proud of the villa’s green credentials: solar-heated water in two bathrooms (with gas-fired in the other two) and a waste water system that irrigates the organic gardens. Smoking is not allowed, but guests are free to help themselves to the fruit growing in the orchard.

Villa Sebali is a great house for several couples or a family, but because of the many small changes of levels, it is perhaps not ideal for those with restricted mobility. Toddlers will need to be watched as there is no protective fencing around the pool or garden walks.

The entrance to Villa Sebali is slightly imposing: there is a strong geometrical look about the front of the house and a rather formal pathway between rows of large potted plants. But once you enter the villa it opens up entirely into comfortable spaces filled with colour and light. A grassy courtyard leads to a 10.8m infinity pool, beyond which is a beautiful view into lotus gardens and the rainforest.

The entrance foyer opens into the dining area with its big eight-to-ten-seater wooden table. To the right is a smart-looking kitchen. Straight ahead and two steps down is the inviting living room with two sofas around a coffee table, a beautiful Javanese antique sofa and a small table and two chairs looking into the courtyard. An antique cabinet holds the sound system, flanked by stacks of CDs.

The four bedrooms are spread around the house as if for maximum privacy. All have the choice of air conditioning or ceiling fan, as well as ensuite bathrooms and safes in their large, well designed cupboards. All have a writing desk (sometimes two) and mosquito nets which add romance as well as protection. One of the bedrooms has twin beds; the other three have queen beds formed by twin mattresses put together and made up in queen bedding. None of the bedrooms have TVs or phones.

The master bedroom (Sky) occupies the second story, above the living room. This very large room has views on all four sides and verandas on three. Beyond the dressing room, its ensuite has a bathtub and an outdoor shower. The Sunrise bedroom suite is in a separate pavilion near the swimming pool with a pretty pergola-covered veranda facing the gardens and rainforest. The bedroom is spacious enough for a sitting area and its large garden bathroom also has a bathtub and outdoor rain shower. Sunset is off the entrance to the left. It is a comfortable and cosy suite with good-sized bathroom and a tiny garden veranda, while Forest, the twin bedroom suite, leads into the TV and games room. This is a circular room with a high conical roof, ceiling fan, and 32-inch flat-screen TV/DVD player and a collection of DVDs; a set of stairs leads down into the grassy courtyard.

The infinity pool juts into descending gardens. Set around it are four sun loungers and a pretty pool balé furnished as a day bed. In the basement of the house is storage room and a ping pong table.
