Villa Seseh Serasi
Built in 1997, Villa Seseh Serasi is perhaps the antithesis of Bali’s modern showcase properties; rather it is a nostalgic reminder of the island’s original luxury residences. Today, set deep in the Balinese countryside with only a few new neighbouring residences for company, little has changed. Beyond its 1000sqm walled grounds this engaging property is still surrounded by a plantation of coconut trees and a village that has successfully retained the cultural spirit and charm of Bali.
Using local materials, this sweet three-bedroom property reflects traditional Balinese design in both its style and layout. Within pretty landscaped gardens of hanging orchids and mature frangipani trees, and set around a square green-stone swimming pool, three thatch-roofed pavilions are beautifully situated – two are open-sided, accentuating a low-key, tropical lifestyle. Nonetheless, Seseh Serasi’s contemporary, unpretentious interiors provide all the necessary modern comforts for discerning guests, including a 29-inch flat-screen TV, DVD player and iPod dock.
The villa’s endearingly friendly staff team (some of whom have worked at Seseh Serasi since it was built) do their utmost to make sure guests are well looked after; refreshingly informal and great with kids, they are like part of the family. Chef Nyoman, talented in both Indonesian and international cuisine, has been trained by the villa’s co-owner, a renowned Australian food editor. Daily American breakfasts, plus coffee, tea and water are complimentary, while other provisions are charged to guest account. Nyoman does not live in and only comes to the villa to cook lunch and dinner if requested.
Villa Seseh Serasi was designed to introduce guests to Bali’s rural village lifestyle and culture, and is ideal for families and friends seeking a private, peaceful retreat. However, a car and driver can be organised (at extra cost) for those who wish to explore further afield, and the bright lights of Seminyak are only 13 kilometres away.

Designed to resemble a traditional Balinese compound, the villa’s three pavilions face west to maximise the last remaining rays of sun each evening, and are arranged around a square seven-metre swimming pool whose green stone tiles create a naturally fluid connection to the delightful gardens. Alang alang thatched roofing and terrazzo stone floors provide a cooling effect, while understated rooms display Indonesian antiques, artefacts and hand-carved doors.
The double-storey main pavilion features a soaring traditional-style roof. Open-sided, it is protected from the elements by long bamboo blinds and cooled by ceiling fans. Its ground-floor lobby is furnished in fresh contemporary-style, with a rattan-woven couch and built-in daybed cushioned in blue and white. A stone staircase leads up to a loft-style living room, with built-in daybed, wooden couch and table. A 29-inch flat-screen satellite TV and DVD/CD player comes hidden in an antique wood cabinet; with piles of DVDs, books and magazines supplied, this converts into a great family room.
Back on the ground floor, the master bedroom is accessed via glass patio doors across a furnished stone porch. This air-conditioned room features a queen-size bed draped with a mosquito-net and a lovely open-air bathroom made private by high walls and foliage. Here, a massive terrazzo stone bathtub is capped by a thatched roof.
A single-storey pavilion contains bedrooms two and three; the former supplied with queen-size bed and the latter with two over-sized single beds. These air-conditioned rooms also feature lofty ceilings, mosquito netting and ceiling fans. They share a connecting bathroom with double vanity sink and open-air shower. Patio doors from both rooms lead out to a polished timber porch beside the pool complete with a comfy daybed on a raised platform.
A third pavilion contains an open-sided, timber-floored dining room with an old wood dining table seating ten. A serving hatch connects to a quaint but adequately equipped kitchen.
Centre-stage in the well-tended gardens is the 7 x 7m pool is surrounded by a stone deck with sun-loungers, outdoor shower plus traditional gazebo – perfect for a quiet nap. Moss-strewn walls and towering coconut palms encircle the property.
