Villa Shambala
The single-storey, five-bedroom property comprises a main building and a guesthouse arranged at opposite ends of a dramatic swimming pool. The living room and master bedroom each incorporate the hand-carved teakwood core of an antique joglo, while timeworn statues from the eastern isles have been fondly placed in well-lit settings to show them off to their best advantage. Completed in 2010, the owners have since been living in Shambala and giving it a ‘test drive’ to make sure all is just right before renting it out as holiday accommodation. They have thought of everything, including the provision of a spa room for guests to enjoy massage and Ayurvedic treatments administered by skilled therapists.
Furthermore, this is a pad that celebrates the kitchen. Instead of being tucked away out of sight – a cordoned-off, lowly space where the cook toils in solitude – the kitchen at Shambala is a place where folks will want to congregate. It has every imaginable egg-flipping gadget one can think of and is actually a delight to cook in, but most guests will probably succumb to the natural talents of the in-house manager/cook, who has created a marvellous suggestion menu, and will do all the grocery shopping (on guest account). She is supported by a friendly and willing team of housekeepers, waiting staff, gardeners and security staff.
Due to its tremendous location and large capacity, extended families and groups of friends will be falling over themselves to book the spacious, stylish and luscious Villa Shambala. They will then be spreading the word, so be quick!

The living room is aspected towards the swimming pool, with a large U-shaped sofa built into the four pillars of a century-old joglo. A chandelier hangs from the centre and when the glass doors are open the breezes blow through and the sound of running water can be heard emanating from the waterspouts in the lily pond behind. The doors can be closed for air-conditioned comfort and this also applies to the adjoining dining room, which is furnished with a teakwood table and ten chairs crafted in woven bamboo.
Integrated into the dining area is a chic, custom-designed kitchen – the sort of cutting-edge space that would equally delight chefs and anyone else with a discerning taste for functional beauty. Here, a central island incorporates four gas hobs and a breakfast counter, furnished with four high chairs and lit by a funky assemblage of hanging bulbs.
The master bedroom is characterised by a queen-size bed built into the extraordinarily-carved, tiered core of another antique joglo, which extends way up into the high roof, and is magically illuminated at night. The suite also presents a pair of separate walk-in dressing rooms, and a sexy garden bathroom with a rain shower and huge outdoor soaking tub, framed by frangipani trees and living orchids.
A cosy air-conditioned den is fitted with comfy modern sofas, a desk, and a wall unit filled with books, games, and a 46-inch TV and DVD player with surround-sound.
The guest house offers an alternative TV lounge with a 42-inch TV and DVD player, which will be appreciated by kids or guests staying in the three bedrooms located here. These bedrooms, along with the guest room in the main building, are all furnished with queen-size four-poster beds and adjoined by open-air bathrooms with soaking tubs and rain showers. The spa room rests in a third building.
Finally, the garden has a flat lawn with a 19m swimming pool, majestically bordered by 16 palm trees. An outdoor sofa on the timber pool deck is shaded from the sun by a sail, and there are two cabanas, one with seating and one with three sunloungers. The garden is beautifully lit in the evenings and filled with stone lamps and statues.
