Jivana - Villa Shanti
The contemporary Balinese-influenced design of the villa’s separate pavilions divides the property symmetrically, with the six elegant guest rooms split either side of the light and airy living area. Entry through the villa’s gateway reveals a flowing water feature and reflection pool, behind which lie the property’s pavilions and gardens, with the sparkling ocean beyond. With access from all directions of the property, ‘The Great Room’ lies at the heart of the villa; a large, bright, vaulted living and dining space with floor-to-ceiling glass doors inviting the outside in. Continuing this theme, the villa’s bedrooms all open onto garden or ocean views and offer tropical-style ensuite bathrooms, each with its own garden and two with decadent outdoor black granite bathtubs.
Taking pride of place in the expansive, palm-tree-strewn grounds, the villa’s 25m, black-tiled, infinity swimming pool offers the ideal spot to either cool off or take some holiday exercise. The main pool overflows into a smaller, shallow pool ideal for younger children. Villa Shanti’s elegance and spaciousness has also made it a popular location for weddings: the owners’ daughter was recently married here at a ceremony complete with baby elephants!
As at sister Jivana villas, Ananda and Jia, this villa has a team of full-time staff, including security, maid and a chef (chef service is charged extra and should be arranged at least 3 days prior to arrival), allowing the kitchen to be ignored in favour of some valuable R&R time. Using a menu system, guests can select dishes, Western or Thai, and the staff will not only prepare the meals, they’ll do the shopping too (provisions charged to guest account). The English-speaking on-site manager can arrange activities – including private tours – and a rental car (with or without driver).

The villa has a sizeable garden on its approach, but once through the gate it’s unlikely that you’ll venture that way again given the pull of the views from the ocean-front lawns and the daybeds surrounding the 25m swimming pool at the front of the property. Passing between the fully-equipped modern kitchen and the family room, with its 42-inch flat-screen TV, sound system and library, you will reach the ‘Great Room’. This is the villa’s large open-plan living and dining area, with sliding glass doors leading out onto a wide covered terrace. Sofas offer comfortable seating from which to enjoy the ambience while meals can be enjoyed at the ten-seater wooden dining table. Opened up to the elements or closed for air conditioned comfort, this space offers freedom of choice for any eventuality. Interiors are lovingly furnished with flowering orchids, seashell displays and antique art pieces from around the region, with Buddhist sculptures beautifully filling the odd empty space. Gongs from India complement the plantation-style furniture and dark polished woods with whitewashed walls add to the simple but tastefully refined décor.
The guest bedrooms lie mirrored each side of this central living pavilion, both sides offering master bedrooms with four-poster teak beds, a small study area and elegant furnishings. Sliding French windows open out onto terraces with uninterrupted views of the ocean. Each master bedroom is connected to a twin-bedded room, while a third bedroom with king-size bed completes each of the two sleeping pavilions. All bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms looking out onto their own private gardens. The master and king bathrooms feature twin sinks, tubs and rain showers (the master bathrooms have the added luxury of outdoor sunken tubs). The connecting twin rooms feature smaller ensuites but these connect to the master bathrooms creating a larger bathing space for those travelling with small children. A sliding door allows these rooms to be made separate if preferred.
Outside, a dining sala with sunken seating provides a scenic lunch or dinner spot whilst, towards the beach, the sunset sala is the perfect place to relax and watch the fishing boats return as the sun goes down over the rim of your pre-dinner cocktail.
