Laksmana Estate - Villa Shinta Dewi
Next you will notice the delightful, albeit small, garden – especially the ancient gnarled frangipani trees beside the pool deck – and the understated architecture of the villa. Here, your eyes will be drawn to the immaculately coordinated splashes of colour. We’re not talking boldly painted walls – the designer kitchen is pure white from its floor to its cabinets and marble worktops – but subtle features like the jade and olive-green alcoves, each highlighting a treasured artefact, and the aqua-toned façade of the sumptuous master suite, subtle enough to convince you that it might be a reflection of the pool. Then there’s the collection of richly dyed fabrics covering the cushions and wall panels, complemented by an abundance of brilliantly coloured bougainvillea. Indeed, when you combine this visual richness with the gush of the waterfall, the result is a peaceful yet uplifting ambience that draws guests back, time and again, to this four-bedroom villa in a secure enclave of exclusive properties in the heart of sophisticated, bustling Seminyak. Shinta Dewi is more of an adult villa, and with its terraces and open-air pavilions, it’s perfect for groups of friends or families with older children who want to enjoy tropical living at its best.
The icing on this colourful tropical cake is an open-sided sunset lounge and rooftop terrace. Here, bright orange lazy chairs and honey hued teak match the warmth of the afternoon sunlight, making it the perfect place to relax with a late lunch prepared by the villa’s excellent chef (who also produces a hearty breakfast included in the villa rate), or an early evening cocktail served with a smile by your personal butler.

The villa’s architecture, comprising three separate pavilions positioned around the swimming pool, presents a contrast of textures showcasing smooth creamy-white Batu Yogya stone, rustic shingle roofs and polished marble bathrooms. The economical use of space is remarkable and it is amazing how much is contained within a relatively small area. The master suite, which runs almost the entire length of the pool, incorporates a king bed, a study (which includes a daybed and can be used as a fifth bedroom) and a luxurious bathroom complete with jacuzzi tub and outdoor rain shower. Adjoining the master suite is a compact but well-equipped gym. (Villa guests seeking a broader range of leisure and fitness options can take advantage of facilities at the nearby Canggu Club for the duration of their stay. These include floodlit and indoor tennis courts, squash courts, a 25m pool, gym and aerobics centre, indoor sports hall, sauna, and a billiard lounge.)
The remaining three bedrooms are housed within a two-storey pavilion. The two upstairs bedrooms, furnished with queen beds, have a colonial feel, due perhaps to the partially timber-clad walls, the window shutters, the mirrors and the soaring thatched roofs. Custom-built cupboards feature latticed sliding doors reminiscent of the rice-paper shoji screens of traditional Japanese architecture. Each room is distinguished by an inspired use of Jim Thompson silks for the soft furnishings and yielding wall panels, featuring classic motifs such as oak leaves, urns, elephants and fleur-de-lis. The downstairs bedroom is furnished with twin beds. All bedrooms are air conditioned, have ensuite bathrooms with rain showers and are equipped with TVs and DVD players (as is the study).
Below one of the upstairs bedrooms, a cosy open-sided lounge overlooks the pool and gardens, presenting another aqua wall, woven wicker furnishings, ottomans, and chunky lamps with carved bases and shades to match the cushions. In the third pavilion, a spacious upstairs lounge with a polished teak floor is protected by a soaring roof and bordered by a bougainvillea garden terrace. Below this is the semi-al fresco dining area furnished with a table for twelve, and an immaculate kitchen with service hatches linking it to the dining area and the timber pool deck.
