Silva Tree

  • Location: Unawatuna
  • Number of bedrooms: 3
Escapists, nature lovers and tranquillity seekers are sure to adore Silva Tree’s secluded situation atop Rumassala Headland, just two kilometres from Unawatuna Beach. Peeping out rudely from amidst an ocean of trees this glasshouse in the sky makes the most of the stunning natural vistas through floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors that slide or fold open onto a verdant palm-dominated scene edged by the deep blue sea. Built of steel (silva in Sinhalese), timber, glass and aluminium, Silva Tree is somewhat of an innovation on the south coast, and its blatantly modern design contrasts quite beautifully with the rich wildlife-dominated jungle hillock upon which it stands, where there has been little development, if any at all.

Bedrooms and living areas at Silva Tree each open onto deep elongated balconies designed for soaking in the serenity of this secluded situation, and admiring the views. On the top floor, the expansive open-plan living room and kitchen offer particularly superb vistas over the jungle canopy to the sea beyond, with the broad timber-floored balcony to the front positioned perfectly for pairing panoramas with sunset cocktails and alfresco meals; for relaxing with a book; for sketching the setting or simply for watching the changing scene from the hammock as the breeze lulls you softly to sleep. From this height birds flit between branches and monkeys swing through the trees, making the house feel like a huge modern hide.

Silva Tree has three simply furnished bedrooms and two bathrooms, including one with a tub tucked between two glass walls that slide open to make the most of the views. At night it feels like Silva Tree is the only place on earth; serenity, stillness and solitude envelope the property and the only connection with the outside world – there are no TVs or internet connections here – is through the charming housekeeper and her family who pop in to clean, tidy and cook Sri Lankan meals for you according to a priced menu on request (and can be reached via a mobile phone left at the house for guest use). But if you do wish to venture out, the restaurants, cafés, shops and attractions of both Unawatuna and Galle are mere minutes away.

Silva Tree’s rooms are all located on the first and second storeys of this building that rears up to the height of the trees. Exterior staircases link the two levels, each of which has an elongated timber-floored balcony to the front for soaking in the views.

On the first level are found Silva Tree’s three bedrooms as well as one of the two bathrooms. Each bedroom is identical in size, comes with a ceiling fan and wardrobe, and is accessed via glass sliding doors from a rear balcony walkway. Two queen-bedded rooms sandwich a twin; each opening onto the shared balcony with its views into the trees. The bathroom on this level comes with a shower and toilet, an exterior sink and amazing views.

On the second (top) level is a huge open-plan living space and kitchen as well as a second bathroom with sink, toilet and tub magnificently placed beside two windows that slide open, allowing bathers to admire the spectacular scenes. The elongated living room has glass walls on three sides; to the rear, sliding windows invite cooling breezes, whilst to the front folding doors open onto a deep timber balcony with hammock that’s perfect for admiring the stunning sights. Inside the living room is an L-shaped sofa, a dining table that can seat eight, and a kitchen with hob and mini fridge as well as a barbecue for use on the balcony.
