Sira Beach House

The spectacular coast road that takes you past sweeping bays and dramatic headlands to the gates of Sira Beach House is a fitting introduction to beautiful unspoiled Lombok. Without even leaving the grounds of this idyllic beachfront property, guests will find themselves immersed in an experience that teaches more about the island’s fascinating culture than one would ever think possible from a luxury villa holiday. From the thatched roofs and locally-quarried stone, right down to the villa’s tableware, textiles, furniture and fabrics, almost everything at Sira Beach House is locally produced; even the chef’s red hot chilli peppers – from which Lombok takes its name – are grown in the villa’s organic vegetable garden. And it doesn’t stop there. For a deeper foray into Sasak life (the ethnic group to which the majority of Lombok’s population belongs), villa staff will take you to meet the women artisans who create Lombok’s famed pottery and textiles.

The owners of the villa have taken great care not only to showcase Lombok’s culture but also to preserve the environment. As much as possible of the villa’s six acres of mature coconut grove have been retained, with buildings carefully positioned between the trees; water is solar heated and wastewater recycled for the garden. The ultimate joy is a large but very discreet team of gentle Sasak staff who are proud to give guests a truly memorable holiday, with service from the heart. Among this team is a full-time chef who will prepare divine local and international meals (on guest account) using the fresh island produce.

Arranged in the style of a traditional Sasak village, the six bedrooms, dining hall and splendid living pavilion at Sira Beach House are supported by all the recreational facilities – home theatre, large saltwater swimming pool, private tennis court, croquet, table tennis, bicycles, car and driver – that guests could ever wish for. This perfect tropical island escape is completed by spectacular views of Mount Rinjani volcano, the three gem-like Gili islands just offshore, and a ribbon of white-sand beach, where local fishermen cast their nets at dusk.

A simple wooden door in a river-rock wall opens into a courtyard leading to a splendid open-air living pavilion, its towering alang-alang grass roof supported by white stone pillars. This elegant space (furnished with antiques and art collected by Lord McAlpine of World of Interiors magazine) is outfitted with Indonesian daybeds oriented towards the garden and beach. To the left, a lotus pond stretches across to the regal open-sided dining hall, complete with 14-seater table and 39 tribal dancing masks, which stare down from one of the walls with a mix of mirth and mischief. ‘Floating’ on the waters of the pond between these two pavilions is the exotic dining bale (gazebo) where meals can be enjoyed ‘Moroccan style’ on low, cushioned seating. The chill-out room, neighbouring the dining pavilion, functions as both a relaxing open-air daytime space and an air conditioned movie theatre with projector and screen. The modern, fully-equipped kitchen acknowledges its location with long shelves displaying Lombok pottery.

The six air conditioned bedrooms are spread across the estate in pairs, enhanced with bamboo shutters, traditional antique furniture, and hand-woven Lombok textiles. The two garden pavilions, each furnished with king-size beds, are entered through a sandy courtyard to a private sitting area that can accommodate an extra single bed (there are four extra beds in total). The two beach pavilions, also king-bedded, are blessed with fabulous views from their private timber decks and have bathrooms with freestanding hand-carved stone baths and grand indoor and outdoor showers. The master pavilion enjoys magnificent views from both the huge bed and the bath; it has a walk-in dressing room, a separate office area and a courtyard garden. Adjoining the same courtyard is a twin-bedded pavilion, making this a private family compound.

The 19x12m saltwater swimming pool is set in the middle of the estate; a wonderful place to relax – on sunbeds, in the hammock, or on vast comfortable built-in sofas in the pool pavilion. This shady outdoor lounge catches the sea breeze and has a built-in BBQ and small drinks fridge, as well as a washroom and shower.
