A peaceful seaside hideaway with an enviable location on the powder-soft sands of Natai Beach, half an hour north of Phuket’s international airport, the six-bedroom Villa Solimar provides a super-private, relaxing escape for extended families, groups and couples. On the drive to the villa, an idyllic tropical scene unfolds, complete with lush palm plantations and green fields and finally to the five-kilometre stretch of near-deserted beach, peppered with just a small number of luxury villas and boutique resorts.

Solimar blends Mediterranean style with Asian detail – including a beautifully carved wooden entrance door, intricate wood-carving on windows and archways – and a mix of Balinese and Thai furniture. A bold use of colour, particularly evident in the bright orange exterior, splashes the villa with a sense of fun and provides a striking contrast to the vivid blue sea and sky beyond. Large windows and vaulted ceilings in nearly all the rooms keep the interior spaces bright and cheerful, particularly so in the living and dining pavilion, which opens out to a broad terrace.

Well shaded and cooled with ceiling fans, the terrace is a great spot for alfresco dining and toasting the sunsets, fronted by a 13m pool with jacuzzi for a refreshing dip. A big slice of green lawn lined with palm trees separates the pool deck from the beach, and at the front corner is a sala (gazebo) offering a shady space for reading and daytime snoozes.

Whatever the make-up of your holiday group, all will enjoy the peace and stretching-out space offered in Solimar's evenly sized bedrooms, with all six suites featuring private bathrooms and gorgeous double-height wooden ceilings. However, it can’t be denied that the two master suites, set in their poolside pavilions, do have particularly fantastic ocean views.

Housekeeping and guest relations are taken care of by two live-in staff, one of whom is a very skilled chef (meals are charged to guest account), practically ensuring that the villa's western kitchen will rarely be used. A concierge service helps arrange transport, tours and bookings for dining, spas and golf.

Villa Solimar's six bedrooms and common areas are all connected by bright, open, orange-painted corridors lined with lovely wood carvings and sand-coloured marble floors. At the centre is a living and dining pavilion entered either through a lush, white-pebbled entrance with double glass doors at the back, or via the spacious terrace that it completely opens out to in front. A sturdy wooden Balinese dining table seats ten while across the room is a living area comfortably furnished with sofas and soft chairs, set beside a flat-screen 42-inch TV and DVD player. With a vaulted wooden ceiling, polished marble floors and clerestory windows decorated with intricate wooden window panels, this is a rather grand area to enjoy an evening of entertainment or a quiet retreat from the sun, cooled with air conditioning or ceiling fans.

In two pavilions at the front of the villa are two master suites with king-sized beds, each offering terrific sea views. The larger suite features an outdoor terrazzo bathtub walled in with elegant grey stone for total privacy and romance, while the other has a spacious bathroom with a shower. Lining the back of the villa are four more ensuite bedrooms (another king, a queen and two twin-bedded), offering conveniently flexible sleeping arrangements for families and groups alike. All bedrooms are set under elegant double-height wooden ceilings with fans and air conditioning. In addition, a large room, with multiple single mattresses on the floor and an ensuite bathroom, offers additional sleeping space for children and a cool massage area. The western kitchen, equipped with modern appliances, is set in front of the staff quarters and kitchen.

The real heart of the villa is its large terrace, well shaded by the villa roof and furnished with an eight-seater wooden dining table, two opulent four-poster daybeds and four sunbeds. The swimming pool with jacuzzi and the spacious lawn offer loads of space for enjoying the sunny outdoors, should one need a change of scene from the inviting sands and balmy sea just a few steps beyond. Set in the front corner of the garden is a thatch-roofed sala with two cushioned deck chairs – ideal for a relaxed afternoon read.
