Surya Damai

  • Location: Umalas-Kerobokan
  • Number of bedrooms: 5
Surya Damai, or ‘Peaceful Sun’ as it translates, is a name perfectly chosen for this enchanting Bali villa. Sunlight dapples through mature palms and flame trees lining 60m of river frontage with emerald rice terraces beyond in the tranquil village of Umalas. Gentle breezes and the soft tinkling of water create an overwhelming sense of calm and well-being enhanced by the smiling ever attentive Balinese staff.

Traditional tropical materials have been used in creating the villa, which was designed very much as a family home to be lived in and enjoyed – comfortable, practical and immediately welcoming. Alang alang thatch roofs, hard wood decks and local stone is used alongside polished cream terrazzo floors and carved wooden panelling, all of a very high quality and immaculately maintained. Individually selected furniture, artwork and artefacts create character adding to the understated comfortable elegance.

The villa is centred around a large open-sided living pavilion overlooking the natural stone infinity-edge pool and well tended gardens. Meandering cut-stone pathways lead to individual dining and bedroom pavilions set close enough to be sociable (and in the case of families within easy sight and earshot) but with clever terracing and well planted gardens that also allow privacy.

The villa’s five bedrooms sleep up to 14 people and boasts sufficient creature comforts to keep a group this size happy: from cable television and surround-sound stereo systems to table tennis and even its own full size tennis court.

Should you wish to venture out of this idyllic setting, a seven-seater car and driver is available to guests (petrol extra) and you are only a short drive from the popular neighbourhoods of Legian and Seminyak which offer an endless selection of colourful shopping, dining and nightlife options; villa staff are happy to make recommendations and reservations. Alternatively, the villa has an in-house cook, a well equipped kitchen and a fairly extensive menu, including children’s meals, so you won’t go hungry. The staff will also shop and prepare meals at your request with no charge other than the price of ingredients and of course you are welcome cook your own meals if you wish.

You enter the villa through a traditional Balinese carved wood doorway overhung with frangipani trees. In keeping with the villa’s charm, spaces are revealed gradually as you move through the tranquil private compound. The dining room, a thatched pavilion with wood framed bi-fold windows is dominated by a stunning polished solid wood table set with twelve high-backed chairs. And for alfresco dining there’s also an umbrella-shaded table next to the six sun beds flanking the pool.

The open-sided living pavilion is airy and light; coconut wood columns with sandstone bases rise from a cream terrazzo floor polished to a buttery patina. Ceiling fans suspended from timber rafters in the high roof and bamboo blinds add to the effect. A large character-worn coffee table sits between soft cushioned sofas and an elegant Javanese daybed with views across the pool and gardens. A flat-screen television and stereo system are discreetly concealed in a wooden cabinet, a scattering of Asian artefacts and standing lamps add character. Colours throughout the villa are earth and natural tones, calm and subtle.

The bedrooms are all entered through sliding timber-framed windows. The master suite includes its own study with separate television and stereo system as well as two covered terraces with daybeds and easy chairs. The outdoor bathroom here features an oversized circular terrazzo bathtub and double vanity. The second bedroom, like the master suite, has polished hard wood floors, a four poster king-size bed and terrace with daybed. Two further guest bedrooms open off the garden. Both are twin-bedded (with two extra trundle beds), feature colourful artwork and bright floor rugs (perfect for children), and have ensuite bathrooms with tubs and rain showers. Above the twin rooms, the fifth bedroom is accessed by an open staircase to a spacious furnished terrace, perfect for a movie night (TV and DVD in situ), overlooking the gardens and with a grandstand view of the tennis court. This bedroom has a four-poster queen-size bed and its ensuite bathroom offers a shower but no bath. All bedrooms have plenty of cupboard space and are tastefully decorated with an eclectic mix of individual furniture pieces, artwork and hung indigenous fabrics. The linens and mattresses are of a high quality and all bedrooms have both air conditioning and ceiling fans. The two master bedrooms and upstairs room all have electronic safes.
