Tanjung Bunga

Villa Tanjung Bunga is a home built by people who eschew minimalism in favour of the wonder of the Balinese aesthetic and the comforts of modern life. It is elegant in an old-school kind of way, but with no pretensions of grandeur. Full-length verandas, carved doors, paintings, objets d’art, and a wealth of traditional Balinese architectural design adorn the villa with a sense of place.

Embracing tropical lifestyle, this beachfront villa was designed to catch the sea breezes and the sounds of the crashing waves. There aren’t many walls at Tanjung Bunga, just an equal mix of indoor and open-air living, as well as a large swimming pool. Outstanding views of the ocean and offshore islands can be enjoyed from the upstairs rooms and a marble-floored balcony that runs the entire length of the house. The very generous and mature garden is filled with colour and adventure, attracting an abundance of birds and cicadas whose songs combine with the ocean sounds to create a symphony of nature.

The villa has all the latest technology; flat-screen TVs, Bose surround-sound systems, electronic games (Nintendo Wii) and multiple speakers both inside and out. The large lawn and profusion of space makes this a great place for entertaining and a delightful retreat for yoga sessions (extra). A full-time cook provides breakfast (included in the rate) and creates Indonesian delights and simple international cuisine, with a focus on fresh healthy local ingredients. The housekeeping team will shop for your groceries and keep the receipts for your reference, and a car and driver are available (at extra cost) if you wish to explore. The villa may seem remote but it is only 12km from Sanur where you can get your fix of cafés and shops and rid yourselves of your holiday spending cash. The rugged, black sand beach is devoid of tourists and at sunset the sands come alive with local villagers who come out to play and take in the beautiful coast that is their home.

This fully-staffed, three-bedroom home is great for both families with kids of all ages or groups of friends looking for something different away from the crowds – a place to chill out or party, read a few books, get a suntan and play on your own terms. It can be rented in conjunction with the one-bedroom Villa Sandat next door.

From a spacious parking area, a traditional gateway leads into the villa alongside a beautiful fish pond with bubbling water features. The ground floor offers a choice of two living areas, one air conditioned, and the other open-sided with a series of pillars and archways that frame the pool and garden. The air conditioned living room has a sitting area with colonial-style daybeds oriented around a 47-inch flat-screen TV/DVD complete with surround-sound. Gorgeous classic Balinese artwork adorns the cream walls, and there is also a dining area with a table for four, a guest bathroom with walk-in shower, and a high-tech professional kitchen positioned to one side. The open-air living and dining pavilion, with a dining table for eight, is accessed by a pair of intricately-carved Balinese doors. The far end of the pavilion is comfortably furnished with large bamboo sofas and extends into a columned veranda running the length of the building.

Upstairs, a marble-floored balcony has plenty of comfy chairs and recliners from where guests can relish the magnificent views of the ocean and islands. Three bedrooms are positioned around a landing furnished with more sofas and bookcases full of books and magazines. The huge master bedroom offers a view of the sea and splendid furnishings, including a queen bed, lazy chairs, antique walnut wardrobes and an armoire housing a TV/ DVD. It adjoins an ensuite bathroom with bathtub and standing shower, as well as a cosy little study with a sofa bed and a desk. Another queen-bedded room offers views of the ocean through glass doors, and use of a marble bathroom (with a bathtub and a shower in the tub) accessed from the landing. In the twin bedroom, steps lead up to high antique Indonesian beds on wooden wheels, and there is also an antique chest of drawers and an ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower.

The generously-sized, hide-and-seek garden is slightly overgrown, full of frangipani and bougainvillea, which makes it both romantic and a delightful place for kids to play. A thick hedge, just low enough to peer over, separates it from the beach while immediately in front of the house is the 11 x 9m swimming pool.
