The Teak House

If you are looking for an intimate villa where you can find solace in blissful natural surroundings, admire the vivacity of the island’s wildlife and always have the ocean playing in your ears, then this is the place for you. As its name suggests, Teak House is constructed almost entirely from teak – one of Sri Lanka’s sustainable hardwoods. Overlooking the sea through a swaying line of palms, this two-bedroom stilted bungalow is sited on the Seenimodera hillside, just a five minute walk to the beach. With lofty arched ceilings, smooth polished floors and elegant interiors, the rich nutty brown wood of the bungalow makes it feel atmospheric, relaxing and complimentary of its wonderfully verdant location.

Surrounding the bungalow is a beautiful garden filled with tropical flowers. The vivid crimson of the torch ginger plant billow from the front of the bungalow whilst the enviable colours and varieties of hibiscus look glorious against the verdant green backdrop. To the front sun loungers scatter the soft grass whilst a hammock is strung up between two palm trees offering its inhabitants a feeling of weightlessness as they gaze up at the swaying branches and bright blue sky above. At night, under the light of the moon and a million stars, this location becomes extra magical as fireflies flit intermittently between the silhouettes of palms in a striking resemblance of shooting stars.

The interior of the bungalow has been elegantly decorated with wooden antique furniture, comfortable soft furnishings and an ambient collection of lamps. Each bedroom is spacious and homely, with three sets of windows that open onto the garden. Bathrooms have a contemporary design whilst the little kitchen is equipped with everything you might need while on holiday. The bungalow is staffed by Roshan who takes care of the house, acting as cook, cleaner and host, whilst his brother works hard taking care of the garden. Teak House is ideally situated for day trips to see the abundant wildlife of Bundala, Yala and Uda Walawe national parks if you can bear to leave its tranquillity!

Teak House is an intimate wooden bungalow surrounded by a large garden with high roof and shuttered windows that allow the air to infiltrate the rooms. You enter the raised bungalow up some steps that lead through bright red torch ginger flowers into the living room, which is centrally located between the two bedrooms and overlooks the garden and sea through an open-sided wall. The living room has a collection of cane furniture and a cushioned rattan daybed opposite an antique wooden coffee table scattered with interesting local books. To the rear of the living room is a circular dining table with seating for four.

An intimate kitchen opens onto the living room for convenience and overlooks the back garden. It is suitably equipped with all the essentials, such as a washing machine, oven, hot plates, coffee machine and a fridge/freezer. Although the kitchen is for guest use, houseboy Roshan can prepare all your meals; he will do the shopping for you and provide you with receipts.

To either side of the living room are the two bedrooms; one is reached up a short flight of three steps, whilst the other (opposite) is reached via a flight three steps down. Both bedrooms are the same generous size, have shuttered windows that glimpse the sea through the palms and have similar furnishings which include a double four-poster bed draped in mosquito netting, a cushioned daybed that can be used as an extra bed (with mosquito net), a writing desk and a canvas-covered free-standing wardrobe to store belongings. Lamps compliment the wood panelling and provide a seductive glow at night. Each bedroom has a selection of books and a concrete and terrazzo ensuite bathroom with good hot-water shower.
