Villa Terang Bulan 3
A pair of almost-identical, modern houses, each with three bedrooms and a swimming pool, located almost next door to one another in the middle of nowhere, Villas Terang Bulan 1 and 3 can be rented independently or together, depending on the size of your group. High-tech amenities and luxury is not what will lure you here (Villa 3 does have satellite TV, but no internet or music system) – but the extraordinary views of the seemingly-infinite rice fields and a chain of volcanic mountains rising from the mist in the early mornings more than make up for it.
Bali has the power to spoil villa guests with all manner of facilities and staff whose omnipresence can sometimes get a little stifling, especially when you fancy a skinny-dip in the pool, or want to buzz around the kitchen making your favourite sandwiches. Not so at the Terang Bulan Villas, where the only members of staff are a part-time housekeeper who will clean (and cook a basic breakfast at extra cost), and part-time gardener (both of whom are shared between the two villas), allowing you to enjoy a private, fully-self-contained existence.
You will need to purchase and cook your own food as there are no restaurants or home-delivery services in the area and the nearest supermarket is 18km away. A car and driver is pretty essential, unless – for example – you are a seasoned surfer and know the Tabanan area well enough to navigate your way around on a motorcycle.
The Terang Bulan Villas are ideal for couples or groups, those who love the great outdoors, or a solitary novelist looking for some inspiration, and rates are low enough to make long-term rentals affordable.

Villas Terang Bulan 1 and 3 are the two end houses in a row of three, bounded by rice fields and a river valley.
The layout of each villa is the same, the only difference being that Terang Bulan 3 has a larger garden and captures 270 degrees of panoramic views. Each is entered via a timber deck over an ornamental pond. On one side of this is an air conditioned ground floor bedroom featuring a tiled floor and doors that open to the garden and a small terrace for relaxing. The bedroom is furnished with a queen-size bed, and has a dressing room and a simple ensuite bathroom fitted with a walk-in shower in a small cubicle.
On the other side of the pond is the entrance to the living room, complete with an integrated kitchen and a dining area on a slightly elevated level. The indoor dining space has a tiled floor and is furnished with a table for six. In the garden, outside the dining room window is a further teak-wood table and six chairs under a sunshade. The kitchen is equipped with an oven, four-burner hob, fridge, microwave and a minimal supply of pots and pans, utensils, plates and glasses. The living area extends the full height of the house and presents an upholstered rattan lounge suite, coffee table, and a satellite-channel TV.
A stone-tiled staircase leads up to a gallery complete with a ‘study’ alcove furnished with shelving, desk and chair. The air-conditioned master bedroom presents a queen-size bed, a walk-in dressing room, and an ensuite marble bathroom, fitted with a bathtub with a handheld shower, as well as a standing shower. From here, doors open to a furnished balcony blessed with a glorious view of rice terraces, the river valley and the mountains. The other upstairs bedroom is similar, albeit without the balcony, furnished with a queen bed, and incorporating dressing room and a small bathroom with a shower.
The gardens of each villa boast well-kept lawns, and each has a 12m swimming pool, flanked by a deck with sun loungers and a thatched balé (relaxation pavilion) providing a shaded seating area.
