Villa Tusk
Built by Bruce Fell-Smith back in 1993, Villa Tusk was the first of many notable villas in Sri Lanka designed by this Australian architect. At the request of friends – a pair of holidaying couples who had fallen in love with this picturesque crescent-shaped stretch of beach that so resembled an elephant’s tusk that the village (Dalawella – literally translated from Singhalese as ‘Tusk beach’), and then the villa became named after it – he designed for them a dream home where they could permanently enjoy the beauty of their favourite tropical shoreline. The main house was dissected by a long corridor designed to divide it equally in two so that each couple had half of the house to themselves with the front portion – a living room and kitchen – convivially shared.
The original owners sadly parted with the property ten years later only for it to be snapped up by a couple as enamoured by its coastal location as its charming character and traditional architectural design. They created a third bedroom and updated the interiors around the original Sri Lankan antiques and hand-crafted window and door frames that they carefully preserved for posterity. Today it offers plenty for families and friends to enjoy; rooms are equitable, there’s a multitude of cushy relaxing spots within sight or earshot of the sea and there’s even a small palm-shaded garden to enjoy – perfect for little toddlers. The property comes fully-staffed with a cook who prepares meals at cost price.

Tusk comprises two buildings connected by a covered walkway. The main building, set furthest back from the beach, is dissected by a long corridor from which the three bedrooms and the garden sitting room lead off. The front building, facing the sea, is home to another living room, kitchen and deep wraparound veranda.
Each of the three double bedrooms are similarly sized and come with both ceiling fans and air conditioning as well as attached furnished terraces with enclosed mini gardens that are open to the skies. Inside the rooms, furnishings include a Dutch-style wardrobe, a suspended mosquito net and, in the bathrooms, built-in cupboard storage space. The villa has two bathrooms with showers, one on either side of the house. One is shared between two of the bedrooms whilst that of the main bedroom features an open-air garden highlighted by tropical hibiscus and winding creepers.
There’s a small garden sitting room with sofa seating and a desk located beside the main entrance plus a larger living room in the front building of the house with a squashy blue sofa looking directly out to sea. To one side of this living room is an equipped kitchen whilst to the other is a doorway onto a deep side veranda with dining table for up to eight people. To the front of the living room are twin doors that lead onto a veranda furnished with rattan lounger chairs that overlook the garden and sea.
