Uma Nina

Soaking in the sublime views of Benoa Harbour, the red-roofed buildings of Nusa Dua and the hazy blue ocean beyond, Uma Nina is a heavenly hilltop hideaway. A true sanctuary of elegance and simplicity, this spacious five-bedroom property is gloriously set within a private garden bursting with tropical plants that have been artfully arranged and even more meticulously tended to. From the comfort of your own sun bed beside the swimming pool, views extend far enough even to see tiny planes coming into land, but the only sounds accompanying their descent are the birds in the trees and the gentle trickle of a water feature.

Uma Nina’s interiors are similarly tranquil and perfectly reflect their surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors provide a seamless merger between indoors and out, whilst the neutral colour scheme, complemented by stylish furnishings, is both chic and calming. Bedrooms and living areas, highlighted by contemporary furniture, antiques and interesting Indonesian artefacts, are sufficiently furnished for all practicalities without feeling cluttered. A serene lounge and a big entertainment room, as well as a garden dining pavilion, a tucked away balé and a rooftop terrace, means that there are plenty of options for living and dining, and for all members of a group to find their own private space.

Suitable for many types of guests – from young families, to groups of couples and friends, to multi-generational family groups – Uma Nina is only a ten-minute drive to Jimbaran beach (a car and driver are available for only the cost of the petrol) famed for its soft sands and local warungs serving fish straight from the sea. However, Uma Nina’ staff team also includes a cook whose repertoire of dishes ranges from Balinese and Indonesian specialities through to pasta, seafood and salads. The villa has a dedicated room for spa treatments (therapists are outsourced and charged to guest account) but since it comes with a single bed and ensuite bathroom, it could also be used as a sixth bedroom. The raised garden balé is a perfect location for wedding ceremonies and the set up this contemporary property works well for such functions.

Two stone statues standing sentinel either side of a heavy timber door welcome guests into a chic open-plan living space whose muted colours call for calm. Here, plumped up sofas surrounding a coffee table topped with books, and a solid wood dining table for ten, both look out through floor-to-ceiling glass doors to the sizeable, ironwood-decked swimming pool and garden beyond. Balinese antiques and carved wooden objects highlight this serene living space whilst, to the side, is a sleek kitchen equipped with fan oven, hob, American-style fridge and microwave.

Flanking the living room are two bedrooms – one double and one twin – that come with their own private garden-view verandas, dressing rooms and ensuite bathrooms with showers. The double (the master bedroom) hosts a king-size four-poster bed, a flat-screen TV with satellite connection, iPod docking station and, in its bathroom, an oversized, natural stone tub .

A chandelier made from tricolour mother of pearl hangs decadently from the upper floor ceiling beside an open staircase that winds its way up from the living room. From the landing, a walkway connects two bedrooms – both with queen-size, four-poster beds, sea-facing private balconies and bathrooms with tubs and showers – whilst to the front, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and sliding doors lead onto a sun-baked, furnished terrace with sensational views over the garden to the sea and harbour beyond.

To the side of the garden is a guest house. Here, on the ground floor and stretching the entire length of the building is an air conditioned media room with a full-size pool table, a wall-mounted TV with satellite connection and surround sound, DVD player, Nintendo Wii and cushy sofas. On the floor above is a double bedroom with built-in wardrobes and a bathroom (with shower), and a spa room that’s used for massages; since this room also has its own four-poster (single) daybed and ensuite bathroom with shower it can easily be used to sleep an extra person. All five bedrooms, as well as this spa room, are air conditioned and come with ceiling fans.

Surrounded by luscious foliage and set beside the pool is a fan-cooled dining pavilion where a solid wood dining table surrounded by easy chairs and sofas seats ten people comfortably, whilst a cushioned balé is tucked into greenery to the rear of the house.
